BAND: OWLS

Postby TRIFECTA on Mon Aug 11, 2008 4:24 pm

The spin top ten worst albums of all time ever included this band years and years ago. I decided, I will listen to them to see what they were talking about. After hearing the album in full I decided I fucking hated spin and never wanted to read let alone buy one ever ever ever again.

I fucking love owls. Probably the best band Tim Kinsella has ever done

This is one of my all time favourite records. The absolute highlight for all four musicians. One of the best recordings Steve has done too. I constantly use it as an example of how an album should sound. In particular Victor's guitar playing on this record is stellar. Mike Kinsella's drums never sounded so good either. Great stuff.

Sometimes it's hard to sell people on this album because it is basically a reunion of Cap'n Jazz by another name but literally everyone who hears it blind enjoys it.

NC.

Yeah agreed on everything you said.

This album just amazes me in all aspects.

This is the best works for sure by any members to date.

The drums and guitar when I first listened to it, I just kept saying, it's backwords. They sound like they are playing backwords.

My friend wrote tim kinsella and told him what his favorite lyrics were. In part of his email he stated he lives off weed and spaghetti.

My first album I ever bought on vinyl. I opened it and it was orange and I was blown away. I didn't know at the time anything about vinyl.

The album cover? wtf is that shit? I read/heard that it was a jarbled montage of what each member thought of the band in pictures.

I think Make Believe is (was?) a decent enough continuation of this sound. Sam Zurick and Nate Kinsella are both amazing in a subtly different way. After Mike left Owls he was replaced by the great Ryan Rapsys, who now has a band called Website with Sam Zurick. I'm betting that will also be good.

I keep hoping that Victor will produce something. I heard that he is off the junk now (and has been for a couple of years at least) so maybe we'll hear something from him eventually. The Noyes EP he did with Ryan was great, I'd love more in that direction.

Good band. I thought some of the guitar playing was pretty awesome and fresh sounding.

Perfect album from start to finish. Real shame they only recorded ten songs.

I just got this via Jade Tree mail order last week. I've listened to it a bunch of times since then, and fuck me, its a damn good record.

I found the LP for 40 bucks on GEMM, but I'll hold off until maybe I can find something cheaper.

Listening to right now. Man 40 fucking bucks? When I worked in a record shop a year ago we could still order it and we were selling it at 15 bucks. I remember buying mine for 10 bucks years ago.

It is on spins top ten worst albums of all time. Hence why I fucking hate spin.

Incidentally Victor Villarreal released a record called Alive! this year and indeed, he still is. He's also opening for Joan of Arc December 20th at the Empty Bottle. Tickets are $3. Meaning everyone in the first line-up of Owls will be in the same venue at the same time. Hmmm.

Unfortunately Make Believe, Noyes, Ghosts & Vodka and Website (the band) have all ended since this thread was started.

I don't know if it's official but I spoke to Tim about it earlier this year and Nate basically lives across the other side of the city and they're all too busy with other stuff to get it together right now. I'm sure something will happen again in the future but there's definitely a hiatus on Make Believe for the foreseeable future.

Victor was pretty much the catalyst for the break-up of Cap'n Jazz and Owls. I don't think it's much of a secret that he has struggled with drug addiction in his life. However, now he's clean again and making music so it's all in the past. Ghosts & Vodka (Sam and Vic's instrumental guitar band) recently reformed briefly but nobody could make it work with their respective timetables so they're done for the foreseeable future.

There's a song called 'Later' by Owls which was only on the import editions. There was another one called 'We Are The Owls' which is on a compilation somewhere. Together with the eight song album, these are the only times they recorded. Some very rough ideas for songs were carried over into Make Believe.

no. UNRELEASED stuff. like not-out-no-one-has-heard-it-EVER unreleased:

fuck that, "i live across town bullshit." OWLS should be studio-only. & there should be one studio album every five years 'til they all die.

NC, because there's obvious skill and enthusiasm on display... But while I do think these guys should make music I don't really care to listen to them. None of the bands mentioned above have moved me much at all.

Met Tim a couple times - was a real nice guy. An acquaintence of mine was in Joan of Arc but I still did not dig that band.

Something ponderous, maybe whiny about these bands.

Still, talented guys, so NC.

Edit: oops, I see there's a Kinselladome into which I could have put my post.
