Pop Song: Prince's 'Kiss' vs. Numan's 'Cars'

Postby Into the Void on Fri Feb 03, 2006 11:21 am

Which is the better pop song, "Kiss" or "Cars"? This is a really tough choice for me, I love both songs...though I'm going with "Kiss" I guess.

I'm only going with "Kiss" because my band's currently working out a noised-up cover of it.

"Cars" by a longshot. I'm no Prince fan, and "Kiss" is a particularly grating song.

To judge them as pieces of music is difficult. I might lean toward "Kiss," but I'm really not sure. But if we're looking at these pop songs qua pop songs, I don't think there can be much argument: "Kiss" is easily the better.
Why do you make it so scary to post here.

Cars. Love them synths, just love 'em.

The Tom Jones version of "Kiss" is disturbing. Which is on some
"Art of Noise" record.

Cars may have that great riff, and the entertaining robotik android vibe, and the daft video, but Kiss has the avant-minimal production, the amazing vocal, and the filthy filthy undercurrent . Kiss.

NB. Ignoring the club-footed, ham fisted Tom Jones / Art Of Noise heresy.

Kiss.

The Prince album that features "Kiss" is called "Parade".

In my opinion, "Parade" is a very fine album.

This is an excellent documentary, though it could be longer. It could be many hours longer, and I would like it more.

The DVD is a nice presentation.

To be fair, we're not really comparing apples to apples. "Kiss" is an average Prince song, while "Cars" is one of Numan's best.

I much prefer "Kiss" to "Cars."

"Me, I Disconnect from You"--well, that's a different story.

"Kiss" is pop. "Cars" is rock. And mighty rock at that.

I like 'em both, but I voted for "Kiss".

I do like the fact that none of the lines in "Cars" rhymes. I never noticed that until someone pointed it out to me.

The Prince song. No contest. No waffles.

I am terrified by how many people have voted for Gary Numan.

My wife and I were driving back to Milwaukee through St. Paul under icy conditions. As we were coming out of a long, gradual curve, I went to change the cd, which was playing Cars. I went over onto black ice on the median, and we ended up with a busted-up car and cuts and bruises.

So, Kiss. Which I like anyway.

Incidentally, I was waiting in liine to see Numan at the Metro about ten years ago, and I watched the man sign his name on the bicep of some guy, who went down the street and came back about an hour later with a tattoo over it. He looked to be about thirty or so. Wonder if he regrets it now?
