I do not at all understand the longstanding "indie/underground" appeal of Neal Young. Few of his musical contemporaries or peers seem to have attained such respect. Plus, his stuff just bores me shitless. Also:

-His whiney, candy-ass, little-girly voice

-That "Let's Roll" sign-me-up for the Dubyajungen piece of shit

-That "Rocking in the Free World" piece of shit that I was forced to be party to covering, behind a drum set, on far too many instances from high-school thru college.

-Hearing his whiney, candy-ass, little-girly voice all too often - as he is a pop culture icon.

Neil Young has "indie cred," as you say, because he walks his own walk, and stuck to his guns. Read a little bit about him. "Shakey" is an exceptional bio.

Oh come on, not crap.

In New Zealand they have a radio station called Radio Hauraki that plays "CLASSIC ROCK.........THAT ROCKS!!!!!"

Last time I was there I was waiting at some traffic lights in Auckland when Southern Man came on. I couldn't help myself singing SOUTHUURN MAAAAYUUN!!!! at the top of my voice much at the end of that first verse, much to the surprise of the people in the cars either side of me.

I agree with the point about "keep on rockin'" though.

"keep on rockin' in the free world" is a great song

he has made some pretty bad records, but he has also made many of the very best records. and he understands how to rock as much as anyone in the history of rock.

Not Crap. On the subject of "Keep on Rockin'" How can you not love that noisy off-kilter solo in that song. With that crushing chug backbone and he just floats over the top of it with the blatantly noisy bendy rock. NOT CRAP.

For Zuma and On the Beach (odd that my two favourite NY albums are both heavily loaded on side 2) I'll forgive him almost anything, there are plenty of other brilliant moments scattered about though. I think I've been lucky and careful in dodging the obvious clunkers, although I think even stuff like Trans is interesting (there was a poll about that no?).

I'm going to say what everyone else does because it's true - Cortez The Killer is just magnificent, I'm thankfully able to listen to music at work and have just sat through it for the first time in quite a while. My whole brain chemistry seems to change as soon as it begins, what an utterly astounding track.

I hope they finally reish Time Fades Away like they did w/ On the Beach and all the others a few years ago.

Sleeps With Angels got shoveled under the dirt pretty fast, but I think that's the best recent thing he's done.

I can't defend the "Let's Roll" single. I thought it was cheesy at the time, and unnecessary. It was like he felt like he had to comment on 9/11 and rushed something out. It didn't strike me as well thought out.

I really like all those records.
Plus the stuff he did w/ Buffalo Springfield and CSN, some of which is also very good.
And he was in a band w/ Rick James.
I saw him play at Farm Aid once, w/ Phish. He made Phish sound like a rock band, instead of a bunch of hippies with Ph.D.'s in music, dicking around like they were getting paid by the note.
I think he pretty much does what he wants, a lot of the time what he wants to do is cool to my ears, and any props he gets are well deserved.

There's really nothing to add here except that I really like Neil Young's live version of "Greensleeves". So nice.

His album art is usually great, too, especially "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere".

And there was a Neil Young line in Kurt Cobain's suicide note. I imagine that it was very disturbing for Neil Young to hear his music used that way.

I would also like to register another vote for "Rockin' In The Free World". Actually, I'd like to register a vote for both versions of that song from "Freedom". "Rockin' In The Free World" filled a specific need for me at the time it was released, and it meant a lot to me to have that song available.
