While Tool is indeed CRAP, I find it hilarious that someone on page 1 refered to them as "cock rock", I never heard a lot of cock in this bands rock, just shitty, time-period alt-metal/"post-grunge" on their first few releases and misguided, tedious pretentions afterwards.

Anyway, I hope the recent hype surrounding the band becoming streamable doesn't lead to a new generation of kids becoming "Tool fans" (tm). I remember dealing with those on the internet back in the late 90's/early 00s and how tiresome they were and I don't want a new batch...

I am not really familiar with Tool, beyond knowing Sober and recently listening to a couple tepid snippets from their new record. So I dialed up Lateralus here and am listening now.

Somewhere in the world there are absolutely men who have undressed completely and played this in the delivery room while their children were being born.

CRAP.

I'm on the fence. Their first ep, Undertow and Anime are pretty good. Everything after that is really to long and drawn out and most of the songs on these later albums sound almost identical, very formulaic. And I swear Adam Jones uses the D minor pentatonic scale on everything. He also seems to think that the paint on a guitar effects its tone, which sounds like one of the most idiotic things I have ever heard anyone say. The latest album is awful. They just don't do it for me anymore and there ticket prices are way to high and most of the time they coast even more because the bots buy them all.

I had to investigate a bit after reading this post. And yes, this guy does think the silverburst finish on his Les Pauls makes his shit sound better.

That would explain how he could be so taken by the soundtrack to watch paint dry that he creates, playing Tool music is a multimedia experience to him and a barely musical experience to everyone else.

Why does the singer have to walk like Torgo from Manos-The Hands Of Fate?

CRAP.

Hahaha. Oh my god. You did a good one.

This whole page is pretty good.

I remember liking Lateralis when it came out. Hasn't aged super well. I think the spell broke when I went to see them on that tour with a friend who was a mega fan. The live show was tepid. Then I met Tool fans in college. That cured me good.

The thing about the silver pain wasn't a joke!?!? I remember a guy from school asking about putting amp parts in the refrigerator for tone preservation. Turns out it was some Adam Jones mojo advice. I thought that was cleverly funny. Like, dorks will go and put their their little marshall hybrid amp tubes in the freezer. Maybe he was serious.

If you want to see somebody go all-in on paint-tones, read this. It's pretty fun.

The silver color used on the Silverburst was borrowed from the Buick Auto Paint Catalogue. The paint used on the Silverbursts was said to be “heavier” than the paint used on Goldtops or their black Customs. We could go down the rabbit hole of paint and its effect on tone, citing Eddie Van Halen’s Frankenstein where he claimed the Schwinn Bicycle paint made the tone “pop”. I won’t say that paint has no effect on tone because it does, and perhaps the heavier (or more) paint coats may have some darker resonant properties (resonate at a lower frequency).

I would take anything anyone in Tool says with an enormous grain of salt. As mentioned a few years ago I was in the U.K. side of their circle for a while. All of the aesthetics of Tool are not serious in any way. If Adam is talking about the effect of paint on tone, it is him making fun of blues lawyers that read guitar magazines.

The Beatles sanded their Casinos for the White Album based on advice from Donavon. Apparently it worked, because that sounds pretty good.

I never understood the tone guys who use a billion things in their signal chain, but act as though it matters what cables they use. Well it sounds like a super-processed howl....no I can’t guess what color your guitar is, all I can hear is axe-fx.

Tool seemed like decent alternative metal until undertow...then just dull.
