interesting, I thought the album sounded great, though I'm also not enthusiastic about the drumming on it, too rigid. I'd like to hear the drummer from Ulcerate playing in Gorguts, that would be a fine match.

They were an average death metal band.

When they began to "experiment", they did so in a way that I do not find compelling at all.

Back when they were a death metal band, there were already amazing experiments going on with what you could do to death metal and still have it be somewhat the same genre you started with. Atheist, who got some attention, and Cadaver (Inc), who got almost none, for example. In the current scene, with awareness avant-garde black metal being a given, and something as bizarre as Portal being emulated, I don't find anything special or new going on here. And it's still not catchy, which was always notably absent from their work.

Maybe not crap, but I don't get the appeal.

New to Gorguts with Pleiades Dust and it's pretty great although I don't know if the drummer would have bothered hitting anything if he'd known he was going to be so low in the mix. Don't need unrealistically gargantuan smashbro drums but I don't even know how they got them to sound like they do here. Trying to get past this but it's not happening.

RE the former: work your ways backwards into the catalog, or jump straight into Obscura for the pure unadulterated shit.

RE the latter, this sounds like a refreshing concept for metal, tbh. I've generally thought Colin Marston does an incredible job of recording this kind of music, the little I've heard of it.
