I can't wait for the inevitable idiotic reviews on metal-archives unfavorably comparing the new album to free jazz

I actually like this new song aside from some of the overdubbed vocals. It feels at once very dissonant and consonant. A patchwork of weird textures.

oh wow, if this tune is any indication, someone's going to have to get booted out of my "top three of '13" list, which, yes, i have already made.

So stoked to own a copy of their new LP.

My brother just copped the new Deeds Of Flesh album Portals To Canaan and it SLAYS. They actually cover "Orphans Of Sickness" on it. I believe Father Luc personally tabbed out the guitars for Deeds so they could cover it.

Here's the first track of the new album:

Chances are if you like this kind of music to vote either way in this, it's gonna be NC. Obviously one of the greatest of this kind of death metal. Speaking of Deeds of Flesh, dude's label (I think?) Unique Leader put out one of my favorite DM records of recent times this year.

A lot of death metal fans don't take to this kind of approach at all, and even brutal death metal fans may find it too abstract. Which is exactly their crossover appeal.

This shit rules. Those vocals are tuff. Unique Leader is owned by the main dude in Deeds.

I enjoyed it, but it's regular brutal DM that stays "in the box", so to speak. Gorguts are on a different league.

As my brother said:

Colored Sands shit all over every new metal release of '13.

It's a great record. This one and Vexovoid are definitely my favorite metal albums of '13.

Got a copy of the demo anthology boxset...And Then Comes Lividity. Colin Marston handled the remastering at his spot 1,000 Caves in New York.

Stoked as fuck. Been drinking Modelo and blasting the records since it arrived.

Said Weasel Walter that he was more or less a session drummer brought in for that record, and that this would be the reason for the weird, disjointed feel on it (which is a major plus for me). Looks like he was in one version of Negativa as well:

HA. man that is too funny. those "disjointed" parts MAKE obscura, for me.

This band helped paved the way for all this avant garde, experimental metal of late which not only has value in terms of the genre's aesthetic evolution but may possibly provide the next level of extreme for those who might be tempted to find it elsewhere - when swastikas start showing up for all the wrong reasons (not ones that involving critiquing fascism), most likely the genre has slammed into a wall.

so yeah, gorguts - not crap for all the right reasons.

Took me this long to finally really dig into Colored Sands..

I got a small mouthful to say about it, but for now, just want to point out a few things in case I never get around to doing any more:

Highly evolved, compositionally. I can think of not much that comes near it within the genre. To think that at one time I thought of Ulcerate as contemporaries makes me laugh. Is basically peerless.

Longstreth.. Top-of-the-heap, sure, but it doesn't make him the correct choice for the album. I generally like his contributions, but the triggered kick drums sound like a pile of shit.. this is kind of a lead-in to the next point. P.S - Also I think Patrick Robert set the bar impossibly high with Obscura, but anyway..

Overproduced. Yeah, what are you gonna do. It's nowhere near a deal-breaker, but also to my ears conspicuous to the point of always kind of being in the back of my head. What if Steve had engineered this thing.

I do love the record.
