They are playing here in a couple of weeks. And that, like this band, is firmly not crap.

A reluctant crap from me: I love Sleep and Pike is the real deal, but H.O.F always sounded like a regression from what Sleep achieved. Mixing relentless proto-death metal riffing with Motorhead style song structure should rule, but the songs always sound muddy and indistinct.

I think their music would have much more impact if they played their songs a step higher, as is they always seem a bit faceless and sludgy. It’s just all a little bit too “proper metal” for me, I guess.

CRAP.

I am positive Matt Pike has access to my calendar, because every time High On Fire plays in NYC, I have another engagement or am out of town.

You mean, he doesn't have access to your calendar. Matt Pike likes you. You should send matthewpike@gmail.com an invite to your Google Calendar, and this won't happen anymore.

No, I meant that he deliberately books shows that I can't go to because he wants to make me sad.*

Coming around very late on this band. Really enjoying the murk of TAoSD.
Prime numbers and tonal clusters with Radiant Republic.

Bass in the Heavy Bombers We're on the PRF Singles Comp Q1.

Sax with Begin By Gathering Supplies.

Terrible News.

That's not representative of the majority of their stuff, though. IMO they get stuck in a more generic rut just a couple albums later.

Jumped there from BBW, which I've had for a few years without getting into very deeply. These two, they are in heavy rotation these days.

Those are great, BBW even more so, IMO. The one in the middle, Surrounded By Thieves, is also cool.

What sticks out....

“We’re doing our part to expose The Elite and the fingers they have in religion, media, governments and financial world downfall and their relationship to all of our extraterrestrial connections in the race to control this world,” comments frontman and master of the riff Matt Pike. “Wake up, it’s happening. All while we stare at a socially engineered lie we think of as normalcy. Unless we wake from the dream, there will come true doom.”

Word. And thankfully, High on Fire chose Converge guitarist / GodCity Studios owner, Kurt Ballou, to once again take the helm as producer. “I’m really happy High on Fire decided to come back to GodCity to do another album,” states Ballou. “Having been a fan of theirs since The Art of Self Defense, the opportunity to collaborate with one of my favorite bands has truly been an honor.”

1. “The Black Plot”
2. “Carcosa”
3. “The Sunless Years”
4. “Slave the Hive”
5. “The Falconist”
6. “Dark Side of the Compass”
7. “The Cave”
8. “Luminiferous”
9. “The Lethal Chamber”

Apparently Mr Pike was introduced to David Icke's work (he of the global lizard conspiracy fame) by Wino a few years back. I suspect this would have been a pretty unintentionally funny conversation.

I'd rather Pike was wearing a Viking helmet than a tin foil hat, but I'm sure it won't impact the rock factor one iota.

Lol. Yup.

^ Exchange from 2012. Fredric Jameson once called conspiracy theories the poor man's anti-capitalism.

Stoked about a new album from my favourite contemporary metal band.

They played a bunch of songs off of the new album when they came through en route to God City. The new stuff definitely holds up.

It can be annoying when someone says a band is repeating themselves when the thing that they do is undeniably great and singular, but there's literally nothing new here. Every part of this song sounds just like one of their previous songs. That wasn't true on the last album.

I'm hoping there's a few tracks that take some different turns. I'm not expecting it to be as good as the last album, but it'll still be good.

Meanwhile, the sound quality here is so awful that this won't be of interest to anyone but major fans, but this is great footage from 98 or 99. Good for seeing the young Kensel in action as much as Pike.
