This is getting ridiculous.

When are they playing here? The night before I go away.

DAMMIT.

It's a shame you can't be here to see them in October.

Well, I went to see these chaps at the Scala in London's Kings Cross. Indeed, there wasn't much to write home about - until the motherfuckers started playing. Matt Pike writhed and darted like a starving hellhound leashed to a Marshall stack, and tormented monsters of heartbreaking volume flew from his amp (a bit like those spirits at the end of Raiders Of The Lost Ark). Joe bass man looked and played like a mass murderer who has learned how to make earthquakes happen and Des drummer man looked a tiny bit like the guy from CHiPs and drummed a tiny bit like Zeus.

Aaaaaanyway, this was all well and good, and I was most impressed with these nice tattoed gentlemen, but then the gig got really interesting: they actually destroyed the Scala. I mean to say, they played the hardest, heaviest, most atom shattering hard rock I've heard (and I speak as someone who has witnessed the live charms of AC/DC, Slayer and Mastodon) with such final-hour ferocity that the building literally collapsed.

The Scala isn't there any more - you can check!

A downside was that I unfortunately had my face melted, and so lost the use of my eyes, which were of course also melted; I am dictating this post to my deaf secretary (who - ironically - I met at the very same gig).

Hope this helps some!

Fucking brilliant.

In the same way as the ZZ Top C/NC brought to light some weirdness with the PRF, so has this. I cannot believe I am on a planet where 7 people think High On Fire are crap, let alone a forum I enjoy reading.

Saw them tonight. Never heard their records.

They were good but, based on this thread, they might be overrated.

I've seen louder bands and probably heavier too (though I don't usually go see metal bands). I expected something completely different, I thought one of you bastards told me they were "heavy post rock".

Their drummer kicked my ass. First time I've ever enjoyed a double bass pedal.

Not Crap. (but not godlike, just a really good live band)

Expected to be crushed. Instead, heard a somewhat decent metal band.

I can't vote as I haven't heard enough, but based on the live show I'd say crap with a couple of waffles. Slightly better than your average wank-metal.

I have to say, the last time I saw them, they didn't have the same ferocity and volume I was used to, I think. Something changed.

There have been HOF shows that made me want to eat a bus.

i saw HOF at the double door in Chicago last year and having not really heard too much of the band previous, they blew my mind! having said that, i left after half an hour cos it got a bit samey and the volume was obscene (which is a good thing) but def not crap.

BUMP.

Coach and I listened to Blessed Black Wings on our drive back up from Seattle Friday night. I hadn't listened to it all the way in a while.

Such a great, great album. I don't like much metal. I don't really like anything else High on Fire's released. I'm kind of indifferent to Sleep and Om.

But BBW is a motherfucker of a record. One of my favorite recordings Steve has done.

While Mastodon were quite good at one point, that is not the case these days. They've decided to go down the path of horrible 70's shit prog. They've been name checking Genesis for christ's sake in interviews.

Matt Pike slays all of them without spilling his drink.

Goddammit, we've been had! Marsupialized is Mandy Moore! (Though it's about time this board had a celebrity befitting it's status as the Premier Rock Forum.)

I have seen them play three times and heard all the records.
High on Fire is a shitty, boring metal band.
A shitty, boring metal band that for whatever reason a bunch of non metal hipster people decided are the one metal band it's ok to like.
I find that pretty boring. Just like this band.

I never leave shows early, and the last time I saw them I went home after 25 minutes. Could not stand it anymore, just bummed me out how shitty and stupid they were.

I haven't heard Crack The Sky, but Blood Mountain isn't bad. As far as I'm concerned, Mastodon is better than High On Fire for Leviathan alone. Nothing I've ever heard from HOF is as good as any of the tracks on that album.

Which is not to say High On Fire is a lousy band, either.

Leviathan is a fantastic album. Don't care for Blood Mountain, Crack The Skye is horrible.

High On Fire have yet to break my heart like Mastodon has. They may not have a Leviathan (Blessed Black Wings comes pretty damned close), but they don't have a Blood Mountain or Crack The Skye either.

I think this would make a pretty decent thunderdome.
