As smart and intersting as it is nice to look at. I am often amazed by Chris' work in ways I just don't expect.

I love graphics and comics though I tend to be particular, which is to say most graphics and comics interest me not. I am largely unturned by graphic novels and the current whirlabout that surrounds the indie comic industry.

That said...

Ware is in the pantheon with Schulz, Watterson, Herrman, McCay, and Trudeau as far as I am concerned (I haven't read Doonesbury in about a decade but when I was a teen I devoured all of the collections leading to 1984 or so). I love his work on all levels: packaging, graphics, story, emotional impact, intellectual rigor (all of the textual baubles create whole worlds upon which to ruminate). Oh, and brutally direct.

Highest ups.

NC.

I have an Acme display in my living room. It's the Quimbies assembling a comic.

Whenever my mom comes to visit, she asks me when I am going to get rid of it. It has never had a proper place in my apartment, but I love it.

In the future new place, I think I have found the ideal place for it.

Ware is on a panel with Matt Groening, Lynda Barry, and Jules Feiffer at the Chicago Humanities Festival Nov. 7. Tickets were still available as of yesterday, when I ordered mine.

I'm not into the thing he's doing these days, Rusty Brown or whatever the hell it's called. Everybody's sad, all the time. I get it, dude.

Overall, though, I will still give him NC. He did the artwork for the Karl Hendricks Trio's A Gesture of Kindness, and that's good enough for me.

Chris Ware's more recent magazine cover for Fortune Magazine has been rejected. Apparently they weren't too please with the references to Guantanamo Bay and CEO's making off with company money.

Thanks for bringing this up. That cover is amazing. (Milton Friedman Paycheck Advance! Fabrica de Exploitacion!!!) No wonder Fortune hated it. Mad respect to Ware.

What should I read next, after the Jimmy Corrigan book? It's the only thing of his I've read.
