Chris Ware's cartoons have made me tear up on more than (cough) occasions. Sometimes I wonder why I still bother picking up a Chicago Reader now that he's no longer in its pages.

Oh yeah, it's because their online music search function is useless as an elevator shaft full of drowned kittens.

went and saw Chris Ware speak on a comics panel last week @ SAIC.
he was incredibly funny and invitingly philosophical about his work.

I went away, not only vindicated in my opinion of his genius, but I think he may even be more of a genius than I was previously aware.

Not Crap, ever.

I was recently loaned Jimmy Corrigan and liked it enough to be interested in more. The first comic book/graphic novel I ever actually liked. Not crap.

He is pretty funny and considerably more cheerful in person than you might imagine from his work.

About ten years ago Art Spiegelman said something to the effect that Chris Ware was to comics what Jimi Hendrix was to guitar. (Meaning, everyone else was trying to catch up to what the virtuoso was doing.) I will not argue with Art Spiegelman on this point.

I'm a bit behind on what he's done in the last 3 or 4 years but the Jimmy Corrigan book earns him a Not Crap in perpetuity.

Not Crap ever. Though I have to be in the right mood to read much of his work without feeling suicidally depressed afterward.

Did anybody get a hold of "Building Stories?" Is it as amazing as I hear? Apparently the first press has sold out and scalpers are on the loose.

Here's hoping for a second printing.

Also: Not crap.

I'm pretty sure I saw a copy at Quimby's last week. I haven't bought it yet, partly because I am low on cash after the past few months of high spendin', and partly because I have been in a really good mood for about 3 years straight and I feel that the concentrated pathos combined with the cloudy weather lately would end that good streak of mine.

Right around the time that book came out he was giving some kind of a talk at one of the galleries in River North, and a lot of the original artwork for the book was hanging up. Looked really good.

Jimmy, you should grab that copy!

Jealous of Steve V and Bernardo.

The dude at my comic store seems doubtful that it will be reprinted in the same way. Here's hoping he's wrong!

mine showed up in the mail today, it says 'second printing' on the inside of the box. it's a pretty ambitious/ridiculous/awesome thing, and at $32 it's a bargain for the amount of stuff inside.

Building Stories is my "best" holiday present. Too early to say for certain, but it may be my favorite Chris Ware work yet.

I just found a copy in Waterstone's in Aberdeen - bunch of savages in this town, clearly.
It was £30 but it was too nice a coincidence not to buy it, after reading all the plaudits in this thread. I also have a copy of Jimmy Corrigan en route from Amazon, should arrive this week. Should I hold off and read JC before Building Stories, or will it not make any difference to my appreciation of the latter?

I got BS and it is really awesome.

For $35 or so it is a bargain of immense proportions.

Hopefully they will print it repeatedly until the scalpers go broke (It does have a book in it that was previously released, though there are some slight differences between the two, so various editions of BS may have variance).

No need to read any of his prior work before diving into BS.
