Kraftwerk

Postby stewie on Wed Feb 11, 2004 11:03 am

Kraftwerk are one of the coolest bands ever. Germany hasn't produced anything as good since they were around.

Not crap because of:

- Their obsession with cycling
- Their wardrobe
- The fact that they look more German than any German person, ever
- Pulling off a chorus of almost dweeby harmonies at the end of "Autobahn"
- The video for "The Model"
- Best lyrics of any band, ever

A little bit crap in the last decade, but all in all Nicht so Krap.

Not crap! Very, very, very good band. Even their latest release is excellent. How many bands can take a 20 year break and still be as good as they were before?

And yes, I was the idiot who accidentally voted CRAP.

Being an old man, I listened to Kraftwerk "back in the day" (as you whippersnappers say) when I was but an annoying adolescent. Back when we had those large black plastic spinning things, and you put a needle--a fucking needle!--down on them, and somehow music came out! Wild.

So when I was on tour this summer, one of the other acts brought a copy of Computerworld, and I was reminded of how great that album was. Sure, the lyrics...aren't so good. But the music is mighty, and the beat from "Numbers" is a monster. And as cringey as it can be, "Computer Love" revealed its touching, beautiful interplay toward the end. Man Machine is way up there, too. And Radioactivity is responsible for lots of different kinds of electronic dance music. (But, if that's a minus for you, don't hold that against it.)

So yeah, not crap.

Excited that they're coming to Chicago in June at the Riv. This'll be my first time seeing them. Hope it's worth the $40!! Is any show worth $40? Hmmm...

I wish those early Kraftwerk albums would get issued in the States like Kraftwerk 1, 2 Ralf and Florian and Autobahn.

Just found out I have a wedding to go to, so I'm not going to be able to make the show, unless I go to Detroit. 6-hour drive & $40 (plus Ticketbastard fee) = not worth it. I'm the operator of my pocket calculator and it says that's too much expense.

Kraftwerk= kein scheiss.

This was touched on the other thread about Kraftwerk chicago, but they uplifted me with their emotionless music, live. Stellar. Thick beats, great sound, humorous, yet super cool visuals on the jumbo and they had so much gravitas for four dudes in front of nondescript keyboard/laptop stations.

Ralf would make a "half-cupped hand" gesture in front of his mouth everytime he sang to let suckers know. visually and musically monolithic.

Man Machine was epic.

The only downside was there was no-one selling bootleg "KRAFTWORK" shirts outside the venue.

I'm bumping this because of a conversation I recently had.

I have two friends who just detest this band. They are both really big music geeks and have broad tastes, but they just loathe these guys. I run into people from time to time that share this sentiment.

I can't figure out for the life of me how anyone could hate Kraftwerk. I never get tired of them and they make me happy whenever I hear them. Other than Electric Cafe, I love all of their phases.

What the hell can possibly be the problem? Kraftwerk are a serious group that pull it off with a wink. The shows are amazing. Extra cool is the fact that their lyrics are simple enough, and incorporate many different languages, so it works anywhere in the world.

I'm going to use the "B" word, but next to the Beatles, I can't think of a band that launched more different different genres than "The German Beach Boys."

Is that statement wildly incorrect?
Also, I haven't seen a lot of haytaz here, but those of you who can't stand this band, what gives?

Kraftwerk - NOT CRAP.
No no no.
Nein nein nein.
