You probably should go deaf, cause your hearing obviously does not work.

Yes had some great albums, some great songs. Chris Squire is one of the better bassists of all time. And he's got that whole distorted bass tone that everybody's been copying for the past what, almost 40 years.

Yes there are parts that sound like elves dancing on rainbows, and yes Jon Anderson sings about 30 octaves too high sometimes. Maybe they did go on to become gay Christians or whatever shit you could possibly wanna talk on them. But early 70's they were fricken incredible.

If I ever took acid, I bet Soundchaser woulda sounded pretty awesome.

It's okay to not like Yes. Not everybody can appreciate amazing talent and songwriting and whatnot.

Yes

And, if you look at the earlier posts, this thread is over four and a half years old. FFS even when people UTFSF others still cock up, I mean the duplicated Big Black thread is just silly, what with others posting well after the kerble, I mean FFS, use your brains, read the earlier posts, rather than adding to the clutter, which I'm doing right now. Christ, I'm worse...

DONT TAKE AWAY CLOSE TO THE EDGE! I would die. I play that record all the fucking time. I have to agree though, they became incredibly fucking shitty. So did a lot of good bands. The 80's fucked up a lot of shit. King crimson even, but they made a couple a decent albums "lately". Saw them open up for TOOL, twice. It was amazing

They had a good run until Close To The Edge. They peaked with Fragile, although the first album has some great moments too.

It's hard the defend what came after though.

Can't make a C/NC decision.

NC.

Supertramp makes me wish I was abducted by Gary Heidnik. YES had a couple of slammin' songs with some bad parts, and a lot of bad songs with a few slammin' parts. CRAP, WF2.

Fuck Supertramp.

Regardless of what people say/think on here about all those other bands from the 70's/80's with castrato-like vocalists and Moog-playing keyboardists, along with a guitarist who can play a lot of classical and they all harmonize sometimes (examples that come to mind include Supertramp, Kansas, Boston and Styx, all of which are crap), Yes was one that might sound like it fits that stereotype, but doesn't at all. Sure, the 80's happened to them, but most people didn't really deal with the 80's that well anyways, aside from the fact that most of their stuff is fucking incredible.

In conclusion, NOT CRAP.

Re: Band: YES

Over the years my knee-jerk reaction to Yes has been less than favorable. Back when the Lips released The Soft Bulletin, certain friends would attempt to sway my thinking, or, at least promise to give an informed opinion. In my head I was thinking how could a bloated, soulless, cerebral band release any record that could possibly inform that wonderful record.

One night while hanging out with Kliph and Steven, Tales From Topographic Oceans came-up on Kliph's iTunes. It must have been the weed, whisky, and company because it all pretty much made sense at that moment.

For the most part I am still very much unfamiliar with the lion's share of Yes' catalogue, but a solid not crap for Tales From Topographic Oceans being the blueprint for one of the Lips' many numerous peaks.

I love Yes. However, I've always thought Tales... was pretty dire. I also don't understand the idea that they peaked with Fragile because that record has a lot more filler and dodgy shit on it than Close To The Edge. My Yes ranking:

1. Close To The Edge
2. Relayer (Alan White's only good record, I think)
3. Fragile
4. First three albums
5. Anything else below here is pretty much ignorable.

Chris Squire's solo record Fish Out Of Water is excellent too, easily the equal of Fragile/Relayer.

Not crap.
Don't shun it. Fun it.

I like Going For The One as well. I even like Drama - even though I wouldn't consider it an actual Yes album.

I'll listen to just about any Yes album that doesn't have Trevor Rabin on it.
