love this band. Engine Takes to the Water and Tropics and Meridians are fantastic records!

Fun fact: It was recorded by James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem guy). Didn't believe it was the same James Murphy until some serious internets digging. Sure enough, some guys named Albinzi and Wasston helped get his studio off the ground. So if you hate LCD Soundsystem, blame them.

He did the first Les Savy Fav record, too. Quality engineer if you ask me.

June of '44 was Not Crap, but jeez, Doug Scharin, open up a high hat and keep it there, bang on the crash cymbals straight up, just ROCK for once.

One of you fools must have some insight into whether there will be stateside shows or not. Fess up, cuz. Take it to DM's, man, I don't care. I have to see them play again.

They've announced a 4 date Italy only tour with Uzeda. I'm sure there'll be more....

He also played drums in the band Pony before going all dancey. They sounded like the Pixies. I liked them.

I saw the first reunion show as part of the Uzeda 30th festivities in Catania. They were great, seemed really into it and were genuinely moved by the reception they received.

Bumped into the band on Monday at the airport. Sounds like US dates have not been ruled out.

He also did live sound for Six Finger Satellite (and probably Trans Am on the same tour).

For me, Shipping News' discography is basically flawless, whereas some of the jam/groove oriented stuff June of '44 got into never really hit me the right way. Then again, I don't mess with neuroleptics, so.

Yeah, I appreciate what you're saying here. This is also how I tend to consume just about all art/media/whatever.

Anyway, I feel like a June of '44/Shipping News thunderdome would be pretty competitive.

At the risk of detracting further from the greatness of June of '44 w/ praise for Shipping News, I'll go ahead and say that Crabtree has the kind of depth and subtlety that really elevates a band beyond the sum of its parts.

Doug's playing is more directly cerebral, at times so oblique as to border seemingly on antagonism. One of a kind.
