It's totally the bands fault when fans act like assholes about it.

Not crap, but one of those bands I don't like listening to nearly as much as I wished I did.

I would love to hear someone weigh in with regard to the music inspired by this band. I just don't want to hear the music that was 'inspired' by this band.

Many are transformed by art- that is nothing new. Then you go create your own art. That's not cynical, it's just the nature of the beast. People are 'inspired' by Katy Perry, Beyonce, or Lady Caca- that doesn't mean that it's good.

Also, I understand the feminist statement that S-K made recently by asking not to be recognized as 'women in a band,' which means that we have to judge their music equally, as if three hairy, bearded men made it. However, it's also ignoring the obstacles faced by women in music/the arts, and the fact that it is not irrelevant that they have been as successful as they have in a male-dominated industry (both commercial and indie). Isn't that also ignoring the fans _inspired_ by the fact they are women making music?

So if we are judging their music on an equal footing (without all the hyperbole), then they are just another rock band.

Sometimes they're shrill and do nothing for me, and other times they're completely badass. Their hit:miss ratio is pretty damn good, better than the Replacements except they occasionally call out instead of soothe the sad sack dude in me, which I actually think is great, and if that resonates with people, that's awesome.

New record just keeps getting better with every listen. "Gimme Love" is my main jam right now.

One of those 90's bands was always going to acquire enough relative celebrity to use celebrity to bolster their brand enough for it now to be marketed as celebrity, so it might as well be Sleater-Kinney as much as anyone else. A Quarter To Three is a nice tune.
Although:

I really think Sleater-Kinney is a singular band with no clear predecessor or successor

No.

The new record is great, up there with their best.

Saw them last night, and it was volcanic. Amazing band. One of my favorites.

Yeah... S-K is one of my favorite bands and the new album just doesn't hold up to me. Glad they are back together and I would definitely like to see them at some point, but yeah, kind of bummed about the new album.

FYI - you can get the 7-LP deal for $115 today (and free shipping in the U.S.), if that is your thing:

My mind, it's a terrible diskette.

After years of being familiar with S-K and even listing to a few records and liking them, this band is now just starting to "click" with me. Like, it's gone from the "Oh yeah, they're cool but I never listen to them" to "Oh damn - that's what everyone's talking about."
