Bass Player: Mick Karn

Postby 242sumner on Thu Nov 02, 2006 9:09 pm

I find Mick Karn a very fine and original bass player.I enjoy his musical work with the group Japan and the "Dali`s Car" project, featuring Mick and Peter Murphy.
However, some of his solo works are a bit digressive and too jazzy for my taste.
Anyway, I still consider him a great bass player.

Alright! Nine horses is a David Sylvian project, isn`t It?
I think I have their previous record (Rain Tree Crow),although Im not a great Sylvian fan.
I also have a David Sylvian show on dvd, featuring Robert Fripp on the guitar.Fine stuff!

I enjoy fretless bass played with mastery. Despite all the image and make-up I remember this swishy drogo to be associated with, I can't deny his talent. There indeed was much substance beyond the posing.

I consider Dali`s Car (1984) his best post-Japan work in terms of songwritting and structure.Actually he has taken a step further in terms of songwriting. It features Peter Murphy on vocals.
I also like his solo album called "dreams of reason produce monsters".Firs-class.

Not just a great bass player. I remember a live Japan video where the camera angle made it look like he was moving back and forth on a people mover, sort of a sideways moonwalk thing. Increadibly fashionable too. I tried to emulate his sans eyebrow look with little success. The ladies were not impressed. HA!

Salut Bernardo, my fellow countrymen!
Japan was a band way ahead of it's time, but unfortunately it didn't last long.

Ah, that's too bad. I saw him once going through Heathrow with David Torn. I may have been the only person they passed who recognized both of them.

I appreciated his playing in Japan.

A unique and talented player. I can overlook David Sylvian's vocals because of his playing.

He also played Travis Beans in the early Japan days.

Karn fans should check out this Gary Numan album, he plays on about half of it, and is featured prominently, hadn't heard it until today:

Great bass player that didn't take the "I have a fretless bass" thing too far.

I won the Japan lp Obscure Alternatives on the radio in 1978. I still have it. .
