one of my personal favorites...despite julianne moores over-acting throughout the entire movie.

yes, i think it could use a good 30-45 minutes edited out. but there are a handful of scenes in this movie that completely destroy me every time i watch them.

plus, ive been in love with aimee mann since high school and she has a few great songs on the soundtrack.

not crap....if for no other reason than jason robards performance....not crap.

Crap. Some very fine people think I'm crazy for hating this movie, but I refuse to sit through it again. That sing-along part is ridiculous.

I will put it out there and say that I think American Beauty is the greatest film of all time. Magnolia is a very close second to that. I enjoy everything about this movie. I actually liked Julianne Moore in this movie, especially the scene in the pharmacy. I'll say it, even Tom Cruise does well in this. And the first time I saw it, the "surprise" ending killed me. I felt a little high.

I always wondered about the ending though. It seems like every story has a resolution except for the kid that was presently on the quiz show. He confronts his dad and tells him he needs to treat him better and the dad just says "go to bed." All happy endings except for that. Am I missing something?

it can be a tedious movie to sit through, for sure.

this movie is a great example of how under-editing can make a great movie less great.

yeah, i agree. the sing-a-long thing is pretty cheeseball. but the smile that melora walters gives in the last scene during "save me" always puts a lump in my throat.

but, im gay...so maybe that explains it.

I really admire Paul Thomas Anderson for making watchable films with actors I usually try to avoid.
Burt Reynolds in Boogie Nights
Tom Cruise in Magnolia
Adam Sandler in Punch Drunk Love (my favourite of him)
I saw American Beauty and Magnolia in the same week and I prefer American Beauty, but Magnolia is coming close behind.
I wasn't that convinced at first, but the cinema I watched it in was apparently full of Tom Cruise fans who expected another Mission Impossible and they were completly confused but what they saw. They couldn't deal with the frogs. It was rather funny. I never thought it would be so easy to estrange an audience but Thomas did it just like that. After the frogs half of the audience tried to ridicule the film because they simply couldn't understand it. Always a good omen in my book.

Loads of people whose opinions I respect love this film, but I found it banal, empty and pointless. Its length, pace and tone set it up as something monumental, but it has absolutely tit-all of any value to say.

Yes, the performances are good, the actors are great, but to what end? It is just cornball doody. (That's a technical term)

It's a strange movie in that the usually mediocre Tom Cruise is great and the usually great William Macy and Julianne Moore are terrible.

Overall, it's an amitious mess. I liked parts of it (the story involving the cop) and didn't like others. The falling frog part sucked; the singing part, oddly, didn't suck.

Boogie Nights, on the other hand, is complex and terrific.

i wholeheartedly agree, though the beginning was fairly captivating, intially anyway.

i've never seen Boogie Nigths but on the whole Hard Eight was pretty damn good, even exceptional in parts -- a good "Sundance film" (psuedo-independent release).

I only watched it once when it came out. I did not like it at all. I don't remember why. Maybe I should see it again so my criticism can be more pointed. Or I could watch Bubba Ho-Tep again and smile like a little girl for days.

Liked it a lot. The frogs were a nice unexpected shocker to my system. Cruise was great, though he usu. sucks dick. Wm. H. Macy was great as the well, I don't care what you say. He has a lot of love to give. Juliane Moore was overacting b/c her character was a melodramatic, drugged-out mess. Which works fine for me.

P.T. Anderson kicks my ass damn near every time, but where has he been lately? And I'm shocked at the amount of people here that liked American Beauty & that these films could be mentioned in the same thread. To be fair, I initially enjoyed American Beauty, but after repeated viewings & hearing a film professor call it 'an advertisement for suburbia', I found my fondness of it melt into the loathing I now feel.

Magnolia is N/C.

Agreed to most of the positive stuff said - this is one of my favourite films. There's something about the very beginning that kicks my ass every time, and then I realize I've still got an entire movie ahead of me.

Brilliant.
