After watching Boogie Nights, I thought PT Anderson was the most overrated director. But I put my scepticism aside and watched all of his movies. I wouldn't say Magnolia is my favorite, but I thought it was good. Punch Drunk Love was great, I can't believe Adam Sandler can actually be good in a movie. I like Hard 8 the most. It's got John C. Reilly, Sam Jackson, gambling, guns and hookers. What could be better?!

Fuck this piece of shit movie right in the ass.

You know a movie is in trouble when Tom Cruise gives the best performance.

Haven't seen it since it was playing in the theater but I remember really hating it. Though I might have been expecting too much from PTA after Boogie Nights.

I think people just say that cuz they're not used to seeing Cruise in more "arty" movies actually playing an unusual character.
Macy, Hoffman, Robards, John C. Reily, Phillip Hall, Guizman, Alfred Molina, etc.
Outstanding ensemble cast with tons of great performances. Even the two crazy drugged up women, do the crazy drugged up thing quite well.

Favorite quotes: "I don't know no loud crash!!"
"Find the gun Jim........find the gun shithead!!!"

AS for some people not finding a "point" to this movie. He says it like six million times.
"You may be done with the past, but the past isn't done with you." Be a good person. Treat your friends and family better. Horrible themes.

Yeah. This movie is a poor man's Short Cuts. It's not even Welcome to L.A.. Easily this director's worst movie.

I need to watch the master again, but that might be my least favorite PTA film.

Finally watched this for the first time over the weekend, it being on Netflix and all.

I've enjoyed and seen Boogie Nights multiple times, but I can't imagine myself ever revisiting this again.

I'm really surprised at the praise given in this thread. Maybe I had to be there in '99? I've lived and worked in the Valley, so the familiar setting was nicely portrayed, but holy shit did all these characters suck. Tom Cruise plays a piece of shit misogynist and faces no consequences for it, the ending seemed like it was trying to make the viewer sympathize with his "struggle". Having a shitty upbringing is still no excuse or a pass for spitting on an interviewer and calling her a bitch and seeing no repercussions. And William H. Macy's character was completely fucking useless and annoying.

Steaming pile of crap.

Aimee Mann's songs are fair-to-good.
Taken out of context, Julianne Moore's defensive breakdowns in this movie are passable comedic takes.
I think that exhausts the positive things I have to say.

I'm surprised in all the talk of actors performances here, nobody mentioned Philip Seymour Hoffman's outstanding performance. Easily the best one in the film.

I was lucky enough to see it with Philip Seymour Hoffman in attendance when the Loft Cinema in Tucson did screenings of his movies/Q & As. I felt like a dummy when I asked him 'How did you end up getting the role in Happiness?' and he replied by saying 'I auditioned...and got the part.' People I talked to who were there said he was the nicest guy ever, and was incredibly kind, humble, and didn't have any actor ego whatsoever.

At any rate, my only gripe with Magnolia was the Julianne Moore character and some of the lazy dialogue written for her. Seriously, you can't come up with better lines that 'Shut the fuck up! Shut the fuck up! No, you must really shut the fuck up.'

Forgot until recently that Patton Oswalt was in it.
