I saw Quicksand when I was in high school in the late 90's. I went out and picked up a couple of their albums after that show. Someone commented they play with passion, and I agree. I haven't heard any of their stuff for a while, but this thread is going to make me go out and find some.

Not Crap. No Waffles.

I like them a lot too. I got Manic Compression around the time it first came out and I remember playing it a lot, particularly while I was painting. I got a bootleg copy of Slip last year on vinyl, which is a great album too.

I remember reading an interview around this time with Walter Schreifels in which he said they stayed at Poly Styrene's flat after a London show. Anyway, NOT CRAP, no sir.

I actually prefer Manic Compression to Slip by a large margin.

I also just recently found out that Walter ghostwrote the entire first CIV album, which threw me for a loop.

Which is confusing cuz CIV sucks, but then does that mean that Walter sucks?

"Slip" is absolutely perfect in every way. Of all the 90's drop-D bands and records, that is clearly the finest specimen. I don't even like their other output. "Slip" is so good that they get NOT CRAP with NO WAFFLES for that record alone.
That's not entirely true.

Not Crap! Slip is a great record that brings back lots of great early '90s memories. Saw them at the original 9:30 club in '93 during a blizzard that shut down the whole city. They killed it.

I listened to both Slip and Helmet's Meantime today and I found that I still love both but I wouldn't say that Quicksand were the better band.

I didn't listen to Manic Compression but I remember it sounding more like the Deftones and Tool than Helmet and Fugazi.

That's like saying Flat Duo Jets sound like The White Stripes.

Sergio is a member of Deftones because they are huge Quicksand fans.

I'd personally say that both "Meantime" *and* "Strap it on" were better than Quicksand. In their prime, Helmet's aesthetic was so pure and dry that everyone else doing something similar with more "flair" or melody or whatever sounded watered down to me. I dug Quicksand at the time but their emo-esque tendencies and certain post-grunge qualities has not held up as well to me as Helmet has.
