I used to dismiss Scary Monters (album). But man, it's really good. The song Scary Monsters almost sounds like it could be a Chrome song.

Love Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps).

I haven't heard Blackstar all the way though yet (I know - but honestly, I'm not really sure I've been ready emotionally), what I have heard makes me think that with time I might put it up there - that considered, I think Scary Monsters as Bowie's last TRULY GREAT album.

That's not a slight - he continued to make very, very good albums (until the very end!), and only had 3 or 4 *bad* albums. And Scary Monsters IMO is the last in a string of at least nine of those *truly great* records, so....

I don't seem to have been as affected by Bowie's death as everybody else in the world apparently is, but hearing that he had just learned he was going to be a grandfather was very sad.

I was kind of a shit a few pages back when I was nitpicking the film based on the MCA exhibit, but just to be clear: I truly love some of David Bowie's music, and his passing saddened me greatly.

The recent ITV Last Five Years special is worth watching if you feel the same. It didn't convince me that The Next Day is one of his best records, but it definitely offered some perspective.

Diamond Dogs and Station to Station were recently reissued on LP. I was always a Hunky Dory, Ziggy and Aladdin Sane guy. ST and Man Who Sold the World were always ok and I lumped DD in with that. However after recent repeated listens I realize that Diamond Dogs is a weird and great record. As good as Ziggy and Alladin Sane. And it rocks hard.

That guys name is Mike Garson. He's on quite a few of the Bowie records after Alladin Sane. I think there may even be a book about him out there somewhere.

^ Thanks for that. Underrated drummer for sure.

In 1978 I bought the same kit he had in the Tama ad. Still have it.

Anyone else get the remix Space Oddity LP? The single and album were remixed by Visconti. I had no idea about it and saw it in the store. It’s pretty cool. The title tracks remix features a more judicious use of reverb and delay but it’s still tasteful. You just can hear the difference that’s all.

I was surprised how he goosed the drums. They seem really loud now.

Not that that's a problem. Drummers should be loud.

Posted this in the “help me remember...” thread.

The chorus, the main melody “for hope, boys, is a cheap thing cheap thing” —the reoccurring pulling back into this melody/theme — the backing singers in particular. The feeling and emotion of this reminds me so much of something I can’t put my finger on. I want to say it’s from the last 20 years and something pretty separated from Bowie. Like they could have used this exact melody unconsciously.

Just this bit (its not Scott Walker or Robert Wyatt, which the song often sounds like)

I love this song I have just discovered but now I’m scared to listen to it too much because it will over ride this other thing I’m trying to remember. Yet I want to listen to it so I remember. I hate this shit. I will go to my grave trying to figure it out.

May the spirit of the thin white duke guide my damaged consciousness to mental clarity and peace.

Sweet Thing from Diamond Dogs. It's on David Live, too. I think.

EDIT: Oh, you knew that..? Just read the ...help me remember...

I wish Dave sang more weird low stuff like Scott Walker did. I think that's where it came from.

Help me remember where my Bowie lp's are...
