I dislike Gladwell.

I’m not entirely sure what makes people go ga-ga over his often apparent assessments of trends and habits.

James Burke is a much better writer, thinker, and player in this realm.

He reminds me of Harpo Marx.

In this photo, he seems like he should be in Bright Eyes or something.

my wife had to read "blink" for a yoga teacher training and she still can't figure out why.

i read the final chapter.

people carry prejudices? brilliant. what an ass.

it's a self-help book without being written in such terms. it's "chicken soup for the shallow, guilt-laden, liberal yuppie soul"

I've never read any of his books, but his articles for The New Yorker are generally excellent. They're archived here.

I can't recall any of them that struck me as particularly shallow, and I definitely don't get a "chicken soup for the soul" vibe from any of them.

As far as the fact that apparently yuppies like him, well, so fucking what?

blink, bought it in an airport. still lying unfinished somewhere. at least it didn't distract me from getting a tan.

i would add: "& our prejudices can be a bad thing. but sometimes they can be a good thing too!" yawn.

very much the pseudo-science text, this one.

NC for the most part. one of the best articles of his was about how you don't need to be young in order to be a "genius." The article systematically destroys most of the mythology of the "young genius" type, a fact that I found inspiring.

His latest book however, I think is best described by Charlie Kaufman in the film Adaptation: "It's that sprawling New Yorker crap!"

He did bring up one interesting issue though: the age gaps that are present in the school system and how this can affect the child's development. Sadly, his chapter wasn't about this problem that is very prevalent in urban schools; it was about yuppie kids in hockey leagues in Canada.

Fuck this guy. He's another one of these bullshit trend forecasters...what the fuck? Really. This is how he makes a living? What he does is pretty much worthless. Anyone could do that shit.

CRAP. No waffles.

Lots of people are very good writers that get into obscure subjects. Lots of people can write about thorny issues in public policy. Only Gladwell (and maybe his douchey colleague James Surowiecki) can do so while making me feel like I'm being consistently misled and misinformed.

Dude certainly gets paid, though.

I just finished 'Blink' and I'm going to narrowly say Not Crap. The thing about Gladwell is that he's not much for deriving a conclusion or a thesis. If 'Blink' has a thesis it's extremely confused, contradictory, and often times incorrect. I don't see him much as a scientist or a thinker, more like a very good science or history teacher, a better than average journalist, or a well-read friend. The stories that are told and the research compiled in this book make it worth the read in and of itself. I'd love to criticize him further, but I'd be lying if I didn't learn a lot sub-conscious prejudices and racism, the ability to perform tasks effectively depending on heart-rates, the work of Silvan Tompkins and Paul Ekman, the Cook County hospital decision trees for chest pain, etc.

If you want to know what I'm talking about, watch this lecture on spaghetti sauce.

Notice that nothing interesting or insightful came from his own mind. He's just telling the story of another man's work, and he's quite good at telling the story. He can come to conclusions from time to time, just like he does at the end here. But it's not his strength.

I agree 100%. Haven't read the books, but have learned a lot from his articles.

This one especially.

His article about criminal psychological profiling from a couple of years ago is also excellent. People who voted crap should read this piece.

His latest book is a collection of what he considers his best articles. They include the "young genius" article, the article on criminal profiling, and many more. he excels more in his articles than he does in his books.

Does everyone have a latte and a biscotti? What's that? I'm sorry, they all have walnuts. Alright, now if everyone will take their seats, Malcolm is gonna present us with tons of data and tell us stories filled with exceptions to that data!

Was wondering if opinion towards the man has softened in the past eight years. Admittedly, I've only listened to his latest, most of Outliers and his podcast(s). I felt the Sandusky chapter in Talking to Strangers was garbage, but enjoyed quite a lot of it. I do not have a degree in Psychology or Sociology. Therefore, for those who would argue that he is a pop psychologists, please back your feelings up with well articulated arguments, not twitter length blurbs. And for the record, I have a Journalism degree.

Do we have to submit these in APA format?
