Death Metal Group: Suffocation.

Postby horsewhip on Sat Apr 14, 2007 3:51 pm

Used the fuckin' search function, nothing.

Very few traditional death metal bands are my jam. One of them is Suffocation.

Check out the video for Abomination Reborn check out that thing Frank is doing with his head and hands during that first blast beat section. So cool.

Bonus points for being among the first to attempt to break down the color barrier in extreme metal, and for having a drummer who doesn't play the blast beat like a total pussy. He even has a blast beat named after him - the "Smith Blast."

Not crap.

I remember them. Not Crap.
Yeah, I wrote that. It’s called “I Wanna Rock Your Body.” And then in parenthesis it says “Till the Break of Dawn.”

They stayed at my friend's house, it was a 6/6/06 party and the bass player broke the guitarist's leg while moshing to the stereo. Hilarious.

Decent metal, Not Crap.

EDIT: "SUFFO!!!"

Ehh, I've heard worse. I hate that someone in the mixing process came up with idea that I want to hear the shitty vocals twice as loud as anything else.

There are better death metal bands, but they aren't crap.

This entire record is insane, the entire opening riff is maze-like:

This is surprisingly catchy for the kind of music it is:

NC. Haven't really listened to the post-reunion material. Bummed that they've played Brazil a couple times since reformed and I haven't seen it.

btw, maybe not every fan of this band realises that original guitarist Doug Cerrito wrote a few very characteristic numbers for the Hate Eternal album he was in:

All indications I've seen hint at the recent Listenable Records represses of their first 3 being pretty shoddy. Can anyone confirm/deny?

NC, Effigy of the Forgotten and Pierced from Within are quality.

NC. Excellent group in their prime and the reunion records are not embarassing (quite redundant though).

It's a shame they messed up the production on "Breeding te spawn" though; musically, it's in many ways their most exciting record but the sound renders it difficult to enjoy; a rare example of a death metal act who were better served by a cleaner, more clinical sound-LOTS of precision-riffage turning to nondescript mud otherwise...

Never clicked with me. I tried Effigy... and Pierced... and haven't ever been able to get past the super weak Morrisound production job.

It's weirdly undynamic music: shuffling, muddy sounding little riffs, stuck together almost at random, with the occasional Slayer-style solo. Everything about generic death metal that I don't like in other words; I know they pioneered this style, but it doesn't make it interesting to listen to.

I know it sounds silly to say this about a band called Suffocation, but it really is music you have to put some effort into to "get it". I'd recommend listening to the track "Despise the Sun" (posted above) and if you find anything in it you like start from the EP with the same title and move backwards. There are a lot of interesting ideas in there, if you know how to look. The way the parts go together, and the way the riffs contain fragments of the next riffs and the twists and turns are all much smarter than most people realize.
