I was in a Target buying cat litter and toothpaste. Walking by the electronics section, I heard Gang Of Four piping through every single flat-screen TV on the wall. It was that XBox commercial.. For some reason I got terribly depressed.

Had exactly the same experience in Target last week while picking up ink cartridges. I'd already seen and been bummed out by the Xbox commercial on Youtube, but having it suddenly start blasting out of six TVs behind my unsuspecting head was about the most unpleasant sonic / mediated / public / mercantile experience I've ever had. Sound and memory are of huge personal importance to me (and to others too, I gather); and though meanings shift continously (as is inevitable and necessary), and though it's quite possible that I've misunderstood Gang of Four completely from 1981 on, this was a profoundly, viscerally disruptive experience. Why has the vomiting smiley disappeared? "Barffff."

A Totem Pole wrote:"Guns Before Butter" makes my blood boil in a good way.

Unlike many, I don't prefer the Peel Sessions to Entertainment!, but the Peel version of "Guns Before Butter" -- alone among those versions, i.m.o. -- improves on the studio one drastically. Unmissable.

For better or worse, At Home He's a Tourist is probably 90% of the reason I got started on guitar, after years of just playing bass. Their heights were high enough to make up for their lows, NC.

Gang of Four licensing their music to Microsoft. Yes, I have to say that disturbs me a bit more than hearing Modern English selling hamburgers.

Just got around to checking out that relatively new single, "Never Pay for the Farm".

These guys make really terrible production decisions, don't they.

I hope they put 'Second Life' on the new album, I though that was great.

In general, I don’t really care what bands allow their music to be used for. It’s theirs and they can do what they like at the end of the day. But have to admit that when I saw the xbox ad this weekend I felt pretty gutted. Go4 doing it is just depressing.

I hope they made a truck load of cash. I hope it was worth it.

winston churchill said exactly the same thing, but replaced "rebel" with "liberal" and "establishment" with "conservative."

Mike Watt only let that happen because D. Boon's dad was having health problems - he sent the profits from the commercial to finance his health bills.

Interesting. What if someone in Gang of Two were in a similar situation, either himself or w/r/t a parent or a child (disregarding for the moment that England is a happy wonderland of perfect and free health care)? Would that make the Xbox thing okay, or at least more understandable? Sorry for all the hypotheticals, but it's a way of getting at a slippery ethical point.

I didn't find out about this until a year or so after the commercial aired. Before I knew this, it really really bummed me out on Mike Watt and George Hurley for allowing it. I guess it's not so bad knowing the context, and that the song used was an instrumental.

Yesterday, I gave the latest album Content an attentive listen.

Save for one or two gems, the album is horrible. Opening with what sounds like a nu-metal song? Trying to ape the bands that aped you? Lacking any cohesive vision throughout?

I'm embarrased for these guys.

Yeah, I like that 'You'll Never Pay For the Farm' but I saw them on the tour for this record this past winter. The bathroom and bar lines swelled when they weren't dipping into the past.

Their style is a young man's game. It's just hard to expect them to make records that rival those early records as older men. But they were still very good live.
