I never said WR was rock. I recommended that you post less
on forums you know little about(this), because it makes you look stupid. Stick to the rock forums, or go slug it out with Rickbob or talk about an amp or something.

My point was that Weather Report had nothing in common with Acoustic Alchemy.

To think that was true you would have to be
either severely pre-biased, or tone-deaf, or maybe both.
Oh yeah, and dumb.

You've presumed that I know little about Weather Report because I don't like them. They are equally as uninteresting as Acoustic Alchemy. There's something they have in common, right there.
It upsets you that I don't give them more credit for either a) being decedents of Miles or b) being the first for a lot of things.

Being 'the first' only goes so far with me. I wasn't there so I have no nostalgic relation to the music. They just don't sound good, at all, to me. Deal with it. Try to deal with it without assuming I don't know anything about music, jazz, musical history, etc. It's my knowledge of these things that has helped formed my opinion of this or any band.

Oh, and that they are difficult to listen to.

Hilarious. I went through the exact same thing. I even got to do Jaco's little one-bar breakdown in the middle.

"Birdland," you are the ultimate elevator music tune. Too bad you and Weather Report still suck.

Sure, like 'Heartbeat' and King Crimson still suck. 'Amandla' and Miles Davis still suck. Sounds a bit shallow, huh.

It's silly to judge any group by their radio hit. They had to eat.

Have you heard Night Passage, or Mr. Gone? I ask because I can't really fathom how anyone could call these crap.
And I know that sounds like I'm being precious and one-sided- but even if you don't like Jaco Pastorious or if Birdland reminds you of some Manhattan Transfer doodoo, you have to at least acknowledge their gifts as composers and musicians, as well as their high level of ensemble interaction.

The first time I ever played a show, Weather Report was also on the bill. I did not see their set.

To paraphrase Benny from another thread:

EA: Premier Rock Forum
"forget talking about Weather Report here"
"In some way, perhaps it is the uncool things that we like despite ourselves, that makes us unique. People take a lot of crap here for owing up to their lapses in accepted good taste, but I intend to celebrate it." -Anthony Flack

In bringing back an old thread, I will also attack the musical taste of the owner of the studio which owns this board.

So, Twiggy, you don't like Weather Report, but you do like Tortoise? What's the fucking difference?

I don't like Weather Report or Tortoise. I do like the song "Eye in the Sky" by the Alan Parsons Project. I don't know why.

Von Lmo beats them all. I'm opening another beer right now. Rock music is lame. I'd rather hear crickets chirping.

Big fan of the clever responses above. A gloomy forecast indeed! The Tony Levin is not crap school of people are not going to like my opinion on this one either, but he and Jaco the two most crappy bass players of all time for me. We could discuss skill and precision until the end of time, but to me WR sounds like a mixture of cloudy adult jazz fusion mixed with periods of too many notes. It's raining crap.

Haven't listened to much of their stuff, but what I have heard was pretty much CRAP.

I'll refrain from voting until I've investigated further. Anybody care to post a link or two to some Weather Report material that doesn't suck?

I don't have links, but I'm betting WR bashers haven't heard their first two albums, the first one is called Weather Report (not to be confused with their 80's self titled album, in doubt the track Milky Way is in it), and the second one is "I Sing the Body Electric", the side A of which is phenomenal.

It's since become easy to post examples of the music I mentioned one post / nine years ago, so I'll do that. But first, this link is a blast if you're a fan:

This is all prime Weather Report IMO:

Some of the intermediary stuff (going into their more successful phase) is also great, this trackbeing my favourite:

Me three. IIRC Weather Report play the verse melody on the bass using pinch harmonics. The high school jazz band version we had had the horns play it.

Everything I've ever heard from Weather Report has sounded like the demo tune of a keyboard that thinks it's too classy to play Wake Me Up Before You Go Go but is not too classy to have a demo button.
