Either/Or: Super Nintendo versus Genesis

Has this been done before? If not...

What say you - Super Nintendo? Or Genesis?

Could be a tough call. May simply boil down to the games.

super nintendo... it had my parents worried i'd grow up to be a video game fanatic. turns out i was only a 2d-scroller fanatic, and once n64/playstation/etc came out i lost interest in video games for the most part.

snes had super mario world, super mario all stars, super metroid, donkey kong country, mortal kombat, street fighter, mega man, the adapter device to let you play game boy games, and the early version of mario kart (though that game didn't really take flight until n64)... all i remember from genesis was sonic

I'd much rather play Super Nintendo than listen to Genesis.

And I've never played Super Nintendo.

Sega's got my vote here, folks.

I had Genesis growing up and loved it, I didn't miss having a SNES at all. But later in college I ended up with both, I played and enjoyed the SNES more.

You have to admit, the controllers ARE a factor.

I remember the first time I saw that the Genesis controller had a C button, that blew my 8 year old mind.

I find the SNES controller too small for my paws. And yeah, it had 6 buttons, but they later came out with a 6-button for Genesis.

Yes! I clicked on this thread with intent to write a post about controllers. Although the Genesis had some good games, its poorly designed three-button controller all but guaranteed that the SNES would be better. Consider, for example, how intuitive three pairs of two buttons were for SNES fighting games, and how much is lost when you try to port that level of control to three buttons.

This is a very tough one. Both were heavily enjoyed by me and my friends in college, especially playing Road Rash on the Genesis and Super Star Wars et al on the SNES, that it's really hard to say which is better. One really needs to own both consoles if one is to be truly happy playing video games in that era.

If I had to choose though I would go with the SNES simply because it was, in my opinion, the best Nintendo console ever put out. It had the best games and the most games that interested me. The original NES was great but SNES was, well, a "super" Nintendo.

After the SNES, none of the Nintendo consoles worked for me as their games became very lame and they stuck with their publishing practices. The Sony Playstation won me over the N64 because it had a larger number of games.

SNES, lotta good memories.
The Genesis was ok, but it always felt like I was cheating on the SNES when I plugged it in.

Yes, but the SNES did not have the Zapper, it had the goddamn Super Scope. It was such a downgrade that within a month we were using it as a toy along with dartless nerf guns in our eight-year-old war games.

I'm going to say Genesis because it's the one that I had and Street Fighter was pretty much the best game. Full stop.

SNES might of been the better system overall, especially in the long run. But Genesis games seemed to have more balls. Genesis had the better version of Street Fighter, a bloody Mortal Kombat, better sports games, a motorcycle game where you could use bats and chains, and it had fucking General Chaos.

Genesis was tiring with all of the equations and bad synth licks. Not super-playable to me -- just no game.

Now, Super Nintendo was a mixed bag. They went from just awful pub rock in the early years to evocative post-punk in the middle years to Starship-bad fuck rock in the later years. Query how many times one can shoot 40 percent from behind the arc to prove that (s)he is just a 40-percent shooter featuring too many pixels.

That said, I'll always roll with the mixed bag over Genesis (or the Doors, for that matter), although a brief review of my memory suggests that I played Genesis way more often.
