Band: No Trend

Postby SecondEdition on Wed Nov 05, 2008 10:40 pm

I searched for this. It's not there, as far as I can tell. Kerble away, though.

I have the first 12" EP, Teen Love, and the first LP, Too Many Humans.

I have only heard them for the first time tonight.

This band is absolutely fucking brilliant. Jesus, this is just incredible stuff.

What is this band's later stuff like?

It's decent, except for 'More', which is fucking unbearable.

You really can't go wrong with that early stuff though - 'too many humans', etc... it's funny reading reactions to them from the press while they were still extant, everyone just regarded them as flipper rip offs, but when you hear some of their live tracks, like "punker", or a song like "for the fun of it all", it's hard to understand the detractors.
I was really gung ho on this band for a while. My enthusiasm for them has waned, but they wrote some fantastic stuff.

They don't sound like Flipper at all.

The one thing that sounds like Flipper is the vocal processing, which sounds exactly like the vocal processing on the live take of "Love Canal" from Public Flipper.

They remind me a bit of early Saccharine Trust. They have slow grooves from time to time that are almost encroaching on Flipper territory but I don't think they sound like Flipper either. Sometimes they sound a little like Big flame too.

I always tell my people they're like a "fast Flipper".

The whole yelling about how much life sucks thing, but faster.

No Trend were far more pessimistic than Flipper was, and the music is far more conventionally structured.

I love No Trend. I really do.

These guys are so fucking far-out on the grand scheme of things, it makes me crack up every time. Teen Love and Too Many Humans are some real raunchy, rough and completely pessimistic takes at the idea of human life. It's so much fun to listen to. Especially that "hardcore" middle part in the song Teen Love. Fantastic.

After those two next comes A Dozen Dead Roses. Find this and listen to this. Karma Nights is one of their best songs.

One of my favorite records all time would have to be their album Tritonian Nash-Vegas polyester Complex. Nothing in the fucking world sounds like this. It's actually the only one still in print (on Touch & Go, pretty sure.) and i can't reccomend enough that you pick it up. Songs like Without Me, Fred Reality and Choc-O-Jet are undescribable pieces of work. I can't even come up with a fitting genre to describe the album, but i would have loved to see this incarnation of the band in all their glory.

Interesting for sure.

After much thought, the band that comes into my mind most when I think of No Trend is Scratch Acid. Why? Because Frank Price (RIP), the (really damn great) guitarist on the early No Trend stuff, reminds me of Brett Bradford for some reason.

Conceptually, i understand 'more' - but it's outrageously unlistenable. I mean, i know that's the point, but when something sounds that bad why on earth would anyone bother?

Thought someone other than myself would love to see footage of these guys. I've loved them for a couple years now and this is the first time I've seen any live performance.

Woah! That's crazy!

Anyone know what kind of guitar Frank Price is playing there?

I have no idea what guitar it is he played and actually really have no idea what Frank Price even looks like, thanks to their skipping around in the video. I know the singer, Jeff, is the biggest guy of the group in the white button up shirt who starts off shuffling up to the mic and ends the video playing bass. I also know manager Steven Blush, fills in for the drummer on part of it, but that's just cause the info told me so.

Newsflash (And if anyone thinks this would be better suited to "General Discussion" please start a thread there or instruct me to do so.):

NO TREND IS LOOKING FOR A LABEL TO REISSUE ITS 1984 LP TOO MANY HUMANS...

...Or more accurately, a label to reissue Too Many Teens (the Too Many Humans LP + Teen Love 12" EP). This is widely considered to be the group's finest, most sought-after, and harshest material. Fetches megabucks on eBay. Bleak, slow, nihilistic post-hardcore noise-rock at its finest.

I'm not a former member of the band nor a shill for them, but I befriended one of the ex-guitarists a long while ago. This seemed like a good place to help his cause.

After about 10 years of pressure and even turning down a few offers, Jeff, the frontman and founder of No Trend, has finally relented and given the go-ahead to this project. Some of his ex-bandmates would like to see this stuff back in print.

Decent distribution is important. Money is not as important, but you should be able to pay for the pressing and get it out there in a timely fashion. It would have to be sourced from clean copies of the original albums, as the master tapes have been destroyed.

If anyone is interested and serious, please PM me and I'll pass your info on to the proper channels.

Thank you.

Oh, and No Crap. One of my favorite bands in history.

"Blow Dry" is like an evil, mutated clone of "Public Image".

Not crap, I enjoy them.

Someone recently did a really good interview w/two ex-members of No Trend. Sheds a lot of light on the subject:

OH MAN THAT IS SO UNBELIEVABLY AWESOME HOLY FUCKING FUCK I AM OVERJOYED!!!!!!

Three things:

1) Why not put it out on Dischord? Talk about irony.

2) Alternative Tentacles would probably be very willing to put it out, considering the reissues they did for the Dicks and the Mentally Ill.

3) I thought the master tapes were destroyed! (Edit: Oh, they are doing the source-from-vinyl reissue.)

1.) Funny you should ask. This very idea was proposed by Jeff Mentges. MacKaye was a bit bewildered but he at least pondered the idea. Ultimately, he opted to pass.

2.) I think Jeff might be looking for something more boutique-ish, but that's certainly worth proposing to the band.

3.) They were. Nobody can even find a safety master. Like you said, mastered from vinyl.
