The Civil War was great. I've only seen the first two or so of Baseball and Jazz but I like what I have seen so far. I loved his National Parks documentary (except the John Muir voiceover - that got on my nerves). I'm looking forward to the Prohibition one.

Kind of excited about 'Prohibition'

Not crap at all.

He did a 3 part series called Empire of the Air, based on a book of the same title, about the creation of radio as a technology and industry. That was most definitely not crap.

Jazz is 100% the Wynton Marsalis/Stanley Crouch view of jazz history, which is like American history as related exclusively by Dick Cheney.

So spot on. What a huge towering biased piece of shit. Chock full of misinformation, lies, and fucked biased. I could rant for fucking days on this piece of "revisionist" history. Fuck Marsalis with a big bag of cockroach feces. Just thinking about it makes we want to lay in wait for the people responsible for this turd to die so I can visit their graves and piss on them, the same way the pissed on the history of jazz. If Ken Burns were true to form, he should of left the Negro Leagues out of the baseball series just like he left out white people in the jazz series. Fuck him with soldering iron.

Prohibition was disappointing. Watching 'The West' again, with my wife who never saw it. Really, really enjoyable.

Future releases:
The Dust Bowl (scheduled for 2012)
The Central Park Five (2013)
The Roosevelts (2014)
Jackie Robinson (2015)
Vietnam (2016)
Country Music (2018)
Ernest Hemingway (2019)

Every one of those is exciting.

Yeah, way too long.

WMHT produced a half-hour documentary of novelist William Kennedy telling the story of Legs Diamond to coincide with the Prohibition film. It's only 30 minutes and much better. Watch it free here.

The one on Mark Twain is great; haven't seen much of his other stuff. Does he only focus on American subjects? I'd love to see a good Lenin-/Stalinist-era Soviet Union documentary.

Hemingway should be good. Too bad it won't be out until 20motherfucking19.

'Dust Bowl' was much better than 'Prohibition' enjoyed it very much. Watching 'The War' again bit by bit on Netflix as well, never gets old.

Trailer for 'Central Park Five':

Whenever I watch a Ken Burns doc series I always feel like it could be reduced to 20% of its overall length. They are always so unnecessarily redundant. So much content is recycled that you have to wait long enough to have forgotten most of the previous installment before you watch the next one.

Granted, the grand scope of the subject matter he chooses could easily require 10 or more hours to properly address, but I always feel like he doesn't use that time wisely.

Also. Don't like the sappy string music. Don't like the constant panning across old photographs. Just don't like his aesthetic style.

Crap.

Usually, when I get the Christmastime depression that many people get, I put on Ken Burns' "Baseball" and run the whole damn series.

Then....I'm not depressed anymore.
That's not entirely true.

I have only seen Jazz, but I mostly agree with all the criticisms earlier in the thread - that and there was way too much emphasis on Swing - they kept teasing like Be Bop was going to be featured in the next episode and I remember anticipating it for at least 3 episodes in a row, and then . . . more Swing, or back to Swing, ugggh.

Anyway, not voting til I see other things, but yeah, Jazz was kind of disappointing.

I saw two out of the three segments they showed on PBS. Heartwrenching, but fascinating. The book it's based on is fantastic.

80% not crap, 20% crap, which is to say most of his docs should have about 20% cut out of them.
