Death Metal Stalwarts: Morbid Angel

Postby Ernest on Sun Mar 07, 2010 12:17 pm

Anyone else a fan of Morbid Angel? I've been on a big MA kick lately. It's so goddamn catchy. One death metal band with a consistently good alphabetical discography.

Blessed are the sick was fucking great. Really quite original. Saw them once too and they were good, but can't vouch for other albums.

I'll give them NC for Blessed, for being influential, and for putting on a decent show when I saw them in 1996.

High WF on account of almost everything else they've done.

similar sentiments from me: really liked Altars of Madness and Blessed are the Sick, quite content to have lost track of them since that. Saw them live in about 1990 or thereabouts and thought they were dead good; Pete Sandoval was everything that impressed me about drummers in those days. I'm pretty sure they closed with Terrorizer's "Dead Shall Rise" which, if it's true, is a blinder of a move.

I saw them open for Motorhead in 2002. They sucked. They also had fans to blow their hair back. I thought that was kinda ridiculous at the time.

I haven't listened to them in a long time, but I really liked them years ago. I vote Not Crap. Trey (?) is/was a really great, original, and inventive guitarist, especially for that genre.

I never liked Covenant.

The fans/hair thing was always endearing to me somehow. That and Trey's low-stance + vertical-guitar move.

I saw them a few years ago with Vincent back in the band. It was awful, not good at all.

Not crap- medium waffles for "not being amazing"

YEAH! I saw that tour too! Except why is that a bad thing? I thought that was wonderful and magical. They were like "we need fans to blow our beautiful hair around" and they got them. I like to imagine their band conversations about it. Thumbs up.

had a pretty weak cover band of MA years and years ago. We were called it Morbidly Obese Angel. Had we recorded any of our butchered versions of their songs, we were going to call the EP Altars of Fatness. Good thing we stopped playing before It ruined their records for me. Don't listen to 'em much these days thanks to the band Death (the metal one). Once you listen to all of Death's amazing records, it's pretty hard to enjoy metal that isn't Death. Still...

Not Crap.

First couple records are amazing, though I prefer Altars. Blessed... is already very different, and more in line with what they went on to do, which is actually a fairly personal take on the genre. Up until the F album there's always good stuff in there, but they lost me after that.

A very different band from Death, btw.

My good friend Mike and I once had a film studies course together in which we goofed around a lot to keep it interesting.

One day he handed me his notebook, and written below his notes on the Western Genre or whateverthefuck was this:

"Like a cat, I'm stalking! Like a snake, I'm slithering!"

I laughed pretty hard at that.

By their later material, I'd say so. They weren't drastically different from each other during Death's Scream Bloody Gore and Leprosy days.

Obviously Death went on to become one of the greatest metal bands of all time while Morbid Angel's most recent album is a complete joke.

I have to disagree, even then they were very different, other than falling under the death metal umbrella:

As much as they suck now, I think their good stuff is sort of taken for granted, they had a thing of their own going for a good while there.

Fuuuuuuuuuck.

I'd say Lulu is better based on the laughs alone. It's a terrible album made by old guys that still think kids care about driving their hotrods to the soda parlor to hangout in the parking lot and talk about werewolves, but I think everyone expected it to be shitty...and it followed through.

Illud Divinum Insanus is just so depressing. A sad, horrible album that truly makes you question how the older material set them up for that flop ass shit.

Point taken. Hearing them back to back definitely puts their differences into perspective.

Alters of Madness rules so hard. Both of these songs are going to have me busting the records out later today for sure.
