There's also this happening:

Alan Bishop-Bill Orcutt-Chris Corsano
Sep 7 at Kings Barcade, Hopscotch Festival, Three Lobed/WXDU day show in Raleigh, NC. noon set time

From what I've heard it's going to be an improv set, possibly with a Cream cover thrown in.

I played a show in Oakland with Bill a few months back where he played his cover of "The Star-Spangled Banner" live for the first time. It was a really nice, faithful rendition. If you care to look, I believe this debut live version is on Youtube, but it may not be the whole song.

Big fan of the man but an edition of 70 for that 7"?

That's some bullshit.

Bill's concept for some of his self-released records (he and I have talked about this) is that he presses them, he takes them on tour, he sells them, done. The record never "comes out," in a sense. It's never in a record store, there is no mail order, etc.

Of course there are some obvious problems with this approach and it's going to make people who want the records but can't get them angry and frustrated, but I figure it's his thing, he can do what he wants.

Why he only did 70 of this one, even as a tour-only, I have no clue.

His moaning along with his guitar playing sometimes gets in the way of my enjoying his playing.

Other than that he's NC, and a hell of a guitarist. Truly unconventional.

That's what makes him stand out for me. There are times on How the Thing Sings he goes full Homsar. It's great. It's like he's amusing himself making cathartic sounds on a roller coaster.

Well put. I laughed. Bill Orcutt: not crap. That Vimeo solo electric thing is great.

I'm completely in love with and inspired by Bill's vocal outbursts. They are TRUE. You know he would not just do those parts if he didn't need to.

What I dig the most about 'em though is when he's moaning over some of his most intricate parts, it really feels like the guitar is following the lead of his vocals. It's at moments like that where you realize his guitar really is a 100% extension of himself.

I like Bills vocal touches - it's almost as if he can't stop himself from making those noises.

I love his playing style, but preferred it in the context of the Harry Pussy records. The distortion, drums, and lo-fi recording style somehow make it way less abrasive than the close-mic'd, well-recorded, much-larger-dynamic-range acoustic stuff. I have a hard time listening to How the Thing Sings. I find it really tiring. On the Harry Pussy stuff the band sounds kind of "distant" or something. There's like this buffer of hiss and cassette tape compression protecting you from the brutality of the music.

Saw him live tonight. Incredible guitar playing, like cubist Fahey. Bizarre and beautiful and somehow ancient, in a weird and lyrical way. I have no idea how he could even go about writing those pieces. The timing is so unconventional. He's a truly unique guitarist and I'm glad he's around.

The moaning still got on my nerves.

The opener was Jon Mueller, who did oppressive nonstop solo drumming for half an hour. I respect what he was doing, but it gave me a headache.

I finally got around to asking Bill if he was the guy who "directed" this Complete video thing. Here's his reply:

Bill Orcutt, in an e-mail to Angus Jung, wrote:Hah- you're like the 10th person to mention this to me. The band is from Texas I believe (in any event that's where it was filmed) and I'm not the Bill Orcutt who filmed them though weirdly enough the cameraman friended me on Facebook. He's a high school media arts teacher in Dallas / Fort Worth. I can put you in touch if you want. I should do an FAQ for this....

So true, Maurice.

In a follow-up e-mail to Bill, I asked him if he'd ever listened to Complete, and what he thought of them if so:

Bill Orcutt, who did not direct the Complete movie, wrote:
They're incredible. I'd call them outsider bar rock.
