After two listens, I have some gripes. Basically, the drums are buried and that's a real shame. Shelton should be the star of the show, not the hard-panned guitars. I have to strain to hear the drums. That sucks because there's so much nuance in Steve's playing and I feel like I can only even hear half of it through the din of the guitars.

The other sad thing about this album is it's another victim of the loudness wars. You can't crank it, because it's already maxed out. Crank it and it just crumbles into a distorted mess.

I try not to be too nitpicky about the way records sound, but this is one where it's actually preventing me from enjoying the awesomeness of the music.

New Loincloth lineup unveiled w/Craig Hilton on second guitar and Tomas Phillips replacing Cary Rowells on bass. Perhaps they'll actually perform live now?

This means that Loincloth presently features all three members of Gauchiste, guitarist Tannon Penland's other band, which released an album of slow-moving, ominous abstractions earlier this year. Really murky, ambient-noise-metal concrète. Mentioned above. Worth your time.

Here's an official promo video from that excellent LP, full of open-ended, occasionally lovely imagery shot thru w/a bit of shaky-cam anxiety:

That came out a while ago? The same dude also just reissued Watchtower "Control and Resistance." Both are excellent!

I had no idea. I've considered getting that Watchtower record too.

EDIT: that Confessor t-shirt on the site looks pretty sweet.

Looks like Loincloth will be playing live in the New York area in mid-November, on a couple of bills w/Dysrhythmia.

Loincloth has been touring with SUNN 0))), at least the West Coast dates.

I don't hate on SUNN 0)) like many of you, but I wasn't interested in seeing them when they came through Portland last week. I almost went just to check out Loincloth live.

They are really into closing their eyes, which is not really meaningful except it doesn't sound easy to count.

They are really feeling it, when it sounds like there's nothing to feel.

Despite the soundperson totally working against them and some weird volume issues, Loincloth put on a really terrific performance in NYC. Was like their second-ever gig or something. The new bassist looked like he had just come from a racquetball game. Band members couldn't be nicer human beings. "Hoof-Hearted" and "Church Burntings" were major highlights. Top of the line.

Pen Rollings new project:

http://www.bowlethereal.com/

Free download, 5 songs in 5 minutes.

Dear Valued Listener:

Thanks for downloading our demo, "FIVEMINUTES".
Hope you enjoy it.
We surely enjoyed making it.
There is just one request from our side of this download:

Email us.

We don't /won't have any "tracking software" on our site.
We think that is kinda creepy, and we can't figure out how to do it anyway.
So,it is simply an "HTML" page.
Nothing fancy.
No strings.

Anyway, We would love to know who's downloading the demo, how many people, where they are from, what they think, etc.
So we figured we would ask you to drop us a line at thebowl AT bowlethereal.com and tell us you got it, etc.

Our math:
Free Demo= One Email.
Seems fair to us.

Plus, we are gonna try to make a mailing list to let folks know when we have any new updates to the page, downloads, videos, news, etc.
So, your email response to this download will make that possible.

Anyway, hope you enjoy FIVEMINUTES as much as we do.
And really......drop us a line.
We'd like that.
A lot.

Thanks.
Spread the word.
Share the Bowl.
Hope to hear from ALL of you soon.

Stay Heavy.

Bowl Ethereal.
Pen and Brian.

Yep, this sounds like Pen. Really good, if not exactly full of surprises. But still, a huge pleasure to hear Pen's very non-metal guitar tone playing this abstract Richmond art-metal stuff again. I hope it lasts. And I hope there's vinyl.

By the way, I stand corrected: Pen is playing drums (!), not guitar on those recordings. Although I guess he did arrange the music. It's quite different from Ladyfinger, the last band in which he deployed his percussive skills.
