Have been wondering when commercial film lighting will reach peak neon, and it's overuse will become passe. Thought for sure it was close to its nadir with that Hulu movie I'm Just F***ing With You (which I couldn't even finish), but apparently the well hasn't dried up yet.

That's ^^^ more just "colored lighting," which will always be fair game in photography and film (see: Fassbinder's Lola, one of his weakest films, but extraordinary from the standpoint of creative artificial lighting).

Am talking more about the trend of newer directors drenching their movies in a quasi-neon glow, somewhat conspicuously almost, as if to hide the lack of interesting narrative content. I'm Just F***ing With You is the most egregious example of this I've seen. Like, "Nevermind this boring half-baked screenplay, let's just turn The Good Time Knob up to eleven and let that do all of the introductions."
