Worth reading:

The part about his quest for tone, especially.

Wow. Some choice quotes in there. And it sounds like maybe they will break up soon-ish? Cool!

Yeah! I don't care about this band but of course I'm gonna read an interview about a "tone quest" no matter who it is.

I really enjoyed the fact that this guy had no problem saying he doesn't like his own band's music, esp. in an interview like that one, which was designed to be promotional in nature.

The more I think about it, the more amazing it becomes. Guitarist in well-known band, in a guitar magazine, saying he doesn't practice and isn't really very good at guitar. And he doesn't like his band's music. So good.

The "tone" he's been working on for years is just the "Liquid Metal" preset in every DSP amp.

Three of those guys have been in a band together since they were teenagers. Each of them has talked about leaving/breaking the band up a couple of times.

Just seems like something that is going to happen in that sort of a relationship.

Also, Stephen could have thrown a fit and broke up the band when Chino decided to start playing guitar in the band. He didn't.

So 8 strings tuned nearly an octave lower than standard are now a thing in metal, I had no idea. Does sound cool on a proper hi-fi? Cause guitar parts on youtube vids (on nothing-special Logitech speakers) have moments which are nearly indistinguishable from each other, or anything else for that matter, I guess this is where they go low. Not that it is bad, but it is kind of surprising after all that talk about finding The Tone.

Soon, the guitarists will play detuned basses, and the bassist will play a suspension bridge.

EDIT:
It's happening.

Ha, I think that's a great track, even the oddly retro metal riff is "against type". Even the vocals (to a "fan") have a different thing going on.

So far the new tracks are sounding good, S/T Part II-ish.

Christ, there are so many bands of this era and genre vastly worse than these guys.

I appreciate his candid responses but what the fuck is that guy up to with his gear?

He goes off on an obsessive 'tone quest' only to end up running four fucking amp simulators in parallel? Then he says all metal guitar basically sounds the same anyway; midrangey with a hard edge. So why the four DSPs?

He's got three rigs so he doesn't have to ship them across continents, except he does still ship them back and forth because he can't sort out adequate storage.

And what is with adding all those extra bass strings to the guitar? His goes all the way to the bottom E of a bass, and he's wondering what a nine-string guitar might sound like. Why not just play a fucking bass or baritone? Why do you even have a bass player?

Maybe he wouldn't have so many issues with his tone if he wasn't trying to take it all the way down to 40hz. We have bass guitars and bass cabinets for playing those frequencies.

(...) Then I used the same tuning on the "Koi" record except I dropped it down to E, B, A, D, G, B, E, B, A, D, G, B, E, B, A, D, G, B, E, B, A, D, G, B, E, B, A, D, G, B, E, B, A, D, G, B, E. (...)

If you gave this bro a Les Paul in standard tuning and a JCM 800...would he even know what to do with it?

This is the part that wigs me out. Dude is tuning down to the brown note, and then EQs out the fundamental frequencies of what he's playing so he can aggressively push the mids. This approach to gear is absolutely shit-bonkers to me.

I have no opinion on the Deftones' music. I've heard a couple songs that were pretty cool, and a few that were just like whatever. I'm a say this though: Slayer tuned to E-flat on "Reign In Blood." Most bands tuning down crazy low are NOT heavier than "Reign In Blood." Especially the Deftones.
