Band: Incantation

Postby Plastic Eggs on Sun Oct 20, 2013 8:15 pm

The original murky death metal band. Onward to Golgotha, Mortal Throne of Nazarene, and Diabolical Conquest are total classics.

Very NC, I love Diabolical Conquest.

Their latest record has been on my "to get" list for ages now.

Mortal Throne of Nazarene got a lot of play as fall was starting. I love pulling out of the driveway to this:

I've seen them 6 times and they have never disappointed.

Onward to Golgotha and Upon the Throne of the Apocalypse are my favorites.

Yes, great. Pretty much all their stuff is high quality. They never fucked around with trying to appeal to a bigger audience, and never phoned it in. Commendable really. Uncompromising.

Wish I could get my hands on an affordable copy of "Upon the Throne," alas.

Was there ever a vinyl version? I thought it was CD only, and not widely pressed.

CD only as far as I know. It pops on ebay now and then in the $60-100 range, if I remember correctly.

One of the only bands in death metal keeping it real when everyone else was chasing that plasticky triggered Scott Burns sound. About as NC as it gets

Not crap of course even if Suffocation and Immolation were more my thing in that era when it comes to NYC-area death. Incantation had the coolest *sound* though and since Suffocation has inspired so much dull and soulless "brutal" tech-death and Immolations sound is somewhat tiresome with the pinch-harmonics, they have probably held up better... Oh yeah, alongside bolt Thrower's "Realm of chaos" and Entombed's debut, "Onward..." is one of a handful of albums I think were crucial in terms of giving DM a distinct *sonic* identity radically different from trash due to the thick, murky soupy sludge-sound... The sonics of the scott Burns shit was crucial too of course but too time-period and really not good; I always thougt Obituary in particular would have sounded MUCh better with more "european" production values...

Slowly We Rot sounds good, but Cause of Death... Man. The drums sound like a guy whacking cups with a pencil. That Morrisound sound did not age well at all. Not that I noticed when I was a kid. Ah innocence.

They should compile+reissue more old death metal demos. That's the proper sound for the genre.

Actually, the first half or so of "Slowly..." was recorded already in 87-88 as something of a well-produced demo which one can tell not only from the different production but also their sound as well (=more early Death and Possessed, less "groove"; the Celtic Frost influence is the common trait though) and yes, it sounds pretty cool. I also like the production on the first Terrorizer album and I never had any problems with Morbid Angel's debut either ("blessed are the sick" though? Yuck! Way to castrate a potentially great album...). Those records were all pretty early; later, his sound overall sucked with the caveat that Suffocation and MAYbE Cannibal Corpse probably benefitted a little-I think their records might have sounded very muddy and chaotic without his production-slickness (see:"breeding the spawn");

I remember the first time I heard Deicide's "Legion" with the *constant* ticking double-bass. Not only were they overabusing that-the shitty drumsound on the kicks made it unbearable to me. And the guitar-sound? Puke city...

Another band who sounded MUCh better on demos were the dutch band Gorefest whose demos have a sick Autopsy-vibe but whose debut sounded like a weak thrash-album in production... Lots of other ones as well-here in Sweden, Crematory sounded GREAT on their rugged demos but their sole EP "Denial", while musically awesome, just isn't heavy at all...

And here I was opening up the thread and thinking we were voting on this lot...: :D

featuring - somewhat implausibly - a pre-Fall Simon Rodgers playing (I think) zither.

When I want to listen to death metal, I listen to Incantation. Sicker riffs, "eviler" sounds, consistent discography.

I love Incantation and hate that this A.C. song is the first thing that pops into my head whenever I think about Incantation.

Same here. Every time I see this thread, this immediately comes to mind. I'm not sure if I've ever even listened to that AC song.
