For the releases under their own name, I go with The Meters. As backing bands, I've gotta give a slight nod to Booker T & The MGs. Impossible to lose with either of these groups though.

Came in just to make this poll. I'd say it has to be as a stand-alone group, otherwise it becomes an impossible comparison. I vote The Meters without second thought, for now.

The Meters. That first LP is gold and their drummer was funkier than that of the MGs. Their "thing" wasn't usually uptempo enough to be dance music but it was a huge influence on a lot of deep funk that followed. They played on some great NOLA soul 45s too. And I really dig the Toussaint-Seehorn production stable.
