Without Rush, there would be no Primus.

I've always loved Rush, and never liked Primus except for that cover of "Have a Cigar".

It's like, "JHWH is legit but Islam is mad bullshit" vs. "God-daD is wack but Jesus was cool"

i was in college when frizzle fry came out. the first time i heard it i thought "they're playing 3 different songs at the same time, and he's singing in french".

i listened some more and it started to make sense. i liked that les wrote lyrics like

i don't believe in charity
i don't believe in sin
and if you don't believe in me
we'll play this tune over again

i thought it was endearing and unpretentious, two things i never thought about rush.

you could tell they put a little more work into the songwriting on seas of cheese. pork soda had its moments. i tuned out after that. haven't listened to any of it in years, so i dunno how it'd hold up, but i remember those first couple records fondly.

rush...i don't hate them but meh. i always thought moving pictures sounded really "modern". in a good way.

alex lifeson had the better guitar sounds. larry lalonde's tone was always terrible. he had a cool name though.

primus.

Primus had a song that made me smile two or three times when I was a kid. That song about a racecar driver. Have not listened to Primus on purpose ever, and don't think I've heard their music in at least 15 years.

When people ask me what type of music I dislike, I say Rush 85% of the time. Primus is silly and annoying and relatively harmless other than that, Rush bothers me in a fundamental way.

I have some amusing and/or fond memories related to listening to Rush when I was a kid. I can't think of any related to Primus.

I very occasionally amuse myself/cheer myself up by digging out what remains of my falsetto and unleashing my inner "We've taken care of everything, The words you hear, the songs you sing, The pictures that give pleasure to your EEEYEEEEEEEE".

Yeah, I'm a dick but it amuses me.

I don't know what the Primus equivalent would be.

i used that in conversation just the other day. that song was one of my favs on frizzle fry. i liked that they just seemed like total goofballs fucking around in their practice space. they weren't trying to sell some image or look tough or anything. it was refreshing at the time.

Rush is the Tool of the '80s (and late '70s). Pretentious, pseudointellectual, tastelessly technical, forced in all that they do. And unlike Tool, I bear them no goodwill borne of nostalgia.

Primus are gimmicky, often excessively so, but they bust out enough random heavy parts, well-placed vocal squawks and other examples of knowing their craft that I will freely admit to liking them. ALSO they are nostalgia enhanced.

Yes, Primus is an awful, juvenile joke band.

Primus is the worst parts of Rush and the Residents combined.

A sense of humor covers a multitude of flaws. This does not make Primus a classic band any more than it does so far Gwar, Ludichrist or whatever. But it does allow their moments of virtue to shine through. "Oh, I don't have to take this all that seriously, it's some goofy stoner shit, but wow this song is actually a lot of fun."

Rush is a dour slog through an under-edited SF novel while you have a cold, and all your most pompous acquaintances have been trying to build up the unfettered genius of this author for months, insisting your MUST read this life-changing slab, and it's just a tedious waste of time you could have spent revisiting something you actually LIKE, which would have likely held more surprises.

One of these bands wrote "Working Man."

I love that song.

That band wins.

God these bands are both pretty offensive though. This is a good poll.
