Music-creating entity: Spray Paint

Postby ::: on Tue Jun 23, 2015 2:04 am

Of Austin, Texas.

https://spraypaint.bandcamp.com/

FM Bill Swansea reps for "Selected" Rodeo Songs (2013), while I prefer the brand-new Punters on a Barge (2015, Homeless). Saw them live in 2013 and they were right good.

RIYL: No Wave bands (Theoretical Girls' sparse recorded output comes to mind), Swell Maps.

Maybe this one was done before, maybe not.

I like them alot, and not just as cohorts.

Swell Maps, early Wire, A Frames, etc.

Mostly 100 Flowers, especially the 4-Song 12", + a natural infusion of Branca-via-Sonic Youth.

Good stuff.

So good and the albums keep getting better and better. I've had Punters on a Barge playing non-stop for the past week.

Really enjoyed them when I saw 'em a couple of years ago. Enough so to buy a record. Record was fine. Live show was pretty killer. Nice guys, too.
Unless they change their infrastructure, they're not ready for a punk show.

Not crap. Like someone just said, they get better and better and it's cool to witness. I've seen them play out and kill it but never been that enamored with their records. But this latest one, Punters, just fucking slays. I think much of what makes the latest record work so well is the great mastering job by MIkey Young. Spray Paint are one of the best active bands around, no question.

It's funny. I just had on Mule's If I Don't Six LP that came with an old T&G catalog. I think the blurb about Big Black can easily be applied to Spray Paint:

If you're a sucker for loud, unnatural guitar noises and witty lyrics, you already know 'em.

They're touring Australia right now with Cuntz. I've only heard a few tracks, but I am seeing them this weekend and will report back.

Apparently a new album called Feel The Clamps was released a few days ago on Goner? I'm seeing almost no press on it, which strikes me as a little odd.

I've encountered different songs here and there and have always liked them a lot in passing, but I never listened to a full album until today. The one I got to was Dopers, the second album they released last year: extremely sour and strange riffs, cold, unpleasant, scraping guitar tones (somewhat reminiscent of Craig Scanlon at times), sardonic spoken (unison?) vocals, subtly humorous lyrics.

Good, smart band. They seem a bit hard to love, unless you're really, really into guitars that sound this queasy all the time. But they have their own sound and their own outlook. I find it really hard to dislike a band that calls one of their songs "Goth Apologist" and furnishes it with a Daniel Ash imitation in the left speaker.
Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.

In the someday, what's that sound.

Saw SP last weekend. They never disappoint. The new record is very good. I don't know if they'll ever touch "Punters" something about that one, just gets better every time.

For me it was the 'Bogans & Hoons' EP. Instantly knew I would like a band who called a record that.

Not Crap.

Listened to them on recommendation from the drummer of my band. Became obsessed with all their recorded output. Kicking myself for not taking notice of them when they played Australia a few years ago (apparently one of them lives here now?). New album is slowly growing on me, but Feel The Clamps, Clean Blood, Regular Acid, Rodeo Songs and Dopers are great.
