I don't tend to deal in absolutes. I don't care if you don't like The Beatles, whatever. It bugged me that my ex didn't want to get down to Marvin or Prince, but ultimately i understood that some people just aren't down with their brand of excess. Don't like The Stooges? Hey, no biggie.

But if you're not down with pfunk, i can't be friends with you. If One Nation Under A Groove doesn't make you realize that this planet isn't so bad sometimes, i feel sorry for you.

NC

So many great grooves, moments, absurdities.

Funky Dollar Bill.

It's true that, while I don't claim to be surprised that some don't dig on Funkadelic or Parliament, I find it hard not to categorize such a person as a bore.

I have always liked funk, but I took a bit of time to come round to Funkadelic (aside from growing up around those records). Same with Prince, though that was mostly because I got tired of hearing people tell me I looked like a naked twins riding a white horse with wings. When you are 12 that can matter enough to blind you to greatness.

I probably listen to Parliament more, but Funkadelic still packs surprises. That was a bad ass outfit. Other worldly.

What a horrible thread.

Never listened to P-Funk because of RHCP, the Smurf Dialect, generally looking like clowns, and because I assumed it all sounded like Ohio Players.

Wrong choice. Funkadelic in particular is way heavy, and cool across a lot of songs and albums. Maggot Brain is great and not in any way funky even.

Negatives still remain with the general potty humor, chauvenism that even irks me, and boatloads of filler. Buz they managed to make iz all work as a cohesive whole. Totally NC in a way I had not expected.

Thread shit the bed at page four. Shame.

The music of P-Funk was inescapable as a child, particularly the sonic party soundtracking the mythology and Afrofuturism of Parliament. We weren't invited to the party back then, so we had to create our own happening and It freaked me out. Like KISS, I viewed Parliament as this otherworldly band - but way funkier - imbued with the power of music to make you dance even if you didn't wanna, and that freaked me out. I also believed that Parliament lived inside of the Taj Mahal-like castle on the design for Casablanca Records along with KISS and Donna Summer, but that's another tale. Anyway, forcible dancing. It seriously flipped my lid as a child and gave me the willies, but I could not stop listening to Parliament and it's bizarre cast of characters all trying to bring to heel Sir Nose D'voidoffunk. So weird how a groove takes control of each limb or digit or body part, often times without you even realizing it. Parliament was a beautiful, black, unearthly band with supernatural grooves. I dug them muchly. Also, no shit, but "Motor Booty Affair" was p much the only song that got me wanting to move in spite of the pain over the last couple of months. That bassline is the dopest bassline ever and shit ain't even Bootsy. Big-ups to Rodney Skeet Curtis. Criminally underrated Parliament record, btw.

I'd be remiss if I were to let a PRF P-Funk thread exist without posting me and Tree kicking-off the first Hype karaoke set at the very first PRFBBQ at Union Rock Yards a decade ago. We had some good times. Some real good times.

I became a fan of Funkadelic after hearing Maggot Brain (the album) for the first time. But all the other records I've heard by them have only had like 2-3 songs I'd want to listen to again. Parliament I've never been able to get into.

For Maggot Brain, and various other tracks, not crap.

"What is soul?"
"I don't know!"
"Soul....is like a ham hock in your corn flakes."
- "Whatever happened to that album?"
- "I broke it, remember? I threw it against the wall, and it like, shattered."

Was listening to Mothership Connection on tour, and we were puzzling over this bit:

I’ve been diggin’ on y’all funk for a while.
Sounds like it got a three on it though, to me.

My assumption is that "it got a three on it" is a dis.

That "putting a three on it" means the primacy of The One (as handed from James Brown to all that came in his wake) is compromised, and the funk is therefore squared up.

I'm not 100% certain of that, but it's my best guess. I haven't really looked for other references to it, if there are any.

Oh this might make sense:

http://wampeterbh.blogspot.com/2017/12/sound-s-like-it-got-three-on-it-though.html

The verse section is all on the one. The hook section, to which the regular-voiced DJ is responding, hits the one and the three.

So it might be a roundabout dis of the hook section of the song itself as well. By the vocalist on the verse.
