What say you? Searched, hasn't been done.
Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.

In the someday, what's that sound.

first album = golems drunk on ale in some Bosch nightmare mushroom forest. Nothing else out there that's anything like it really.

Not too into their later stoner-by-the-numbers stuff, but NC

The first album is definitely the masterpiece.

Riffs abound on some of the mid-period stuff, too. One of my all time favorite bands.

I feel a bit mean crapping anything Lee Dorrian is involved with, but aside from the brutally crawling one dimensional anomaly that is Forest... (which, let's face it, was done much better by extreme metal tinged bands like Grief or Eyehategod or even bullshit like Paradise Lost or My Dying Bride a little later down the line), they were goofy, sloppy, stupid crap.

Great art work.

Fucking horrible live. Dire and totally disinterested.

Just heavy rock record collector rock. They clearly love the music, but they have no business making it.

Crap.

The first album / demo (recently reissued on vinyl) were a great early run. The Soul Sacrifice EP is great, though already different / more ordinary, and Ethereal Mirror has some great spots. I gave up when they released the following record and started sounding to me exactly like uninspired, flaccid

And proudly so, sometimes it seems.

They went back to the doom a couple of times later in their career but I wasn't interested anymore. One of the records was Endtyme, don't know the other one. Can anyone attest to the quality of those?

Btw, I completely disagree about other bands bettering the early Cathedral sound, especially Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride, who always brought a healthy serving of THE CHEESE with their music, even early on.

Yeah, first album is an easy NOT CRAP. The rest of their discography is run of the mill stoner doom. If Forest of Equilibrium didn't exist I'd abstain.

This band was pretty quirky from the mid 90s to mid 2000s Leo Smee period. Compared to "run of the mill stoner doom" and "record collector rock" of the time (Queens of the Stone Age, Sleep), they were way heavier. Way more rock'n'roll than the gothic doom of Paradise Lost, etc. Way more capable composition than Electric Wizard and their imitators. They obviously gave up sometime after 2005, and Lee Dorrian has gone from having a weird, interestingly untrained voice to being a tone-deaf nuisance on the last two records, but this is such a not crap band.

If you mainly heard Supernatural Birth Machine Caravan Beyond Redemption, there are definitely some snoozers on those. But there's tons of ballsy '70s rock and plenty of trippy mellotron space cadet stuff in their mid period that's worth a listen.
