Band: shield your eyes

One of the best bands to come out of London in the past few years.

Just split.

About the furthest thing from crap.

Yep, I can concur, one of the greatest bands. All of their 6 records are great. A great loss for British music.

Way, way, way NOT CRAP.

One of my top 5 discoveries of the past year, thanks to this board.

I would have loved to see a double bill of these folks and Chung Antique.

One of the best guitar/ drum combos. Maybe the best I've ever seen.

Last line up also had Dearbhla from the excellent band The Wharves

Here's another good live recording. Bit of another long one.

I think Stef is one of the most incredible guitarists I have ever seen. I had the pleasure of playing bass for him on a solo gig once with about a minute to prep and before every song he'd play the first note into the tuner pedal so I could see it and we'd go from there. Loved it. Love him as well, and SYE.

The opening of their album Reach is some of the most electrifying shit I've heard. Music for punching through a wall then crying to seagull noises

^ listening to that recording just now.

One of the best bands I have ever seen, and I saw them many, many times. First say them with Raygun (Moe) in 2008 or so, when we first met.

Seeing Stef play sometimes just totally blew me away.

What is that guitar he's playing? Looks like a Franken-something. Strat neck? Maybe a strat tailpiece too? Not sure what the body is though.

Also, not crap!

Hacked up strat.

Yep, looks like a strat with a broken lower horn and no pickguard.

Strat with the horns re-shaped. I'll find a good pic later as that was the first thing I noticed about them - "what the fuck has he done to that guitar?!"

I can't recall which tune it is but he does this neat trick where he clips 1 or 2 strings mid-song and it shifts the trem looser and retunes the guitar to something else. Couldn't believe it first time I saw it.

I think the strat bridge is missing some of the springs in the back too, right? So the whole bridge assembly tilts towards the neck and he can lean on it a little to get some of those insane bends without having the bar attached.

Fucking incredible band.

The bridge on both his weird Strats is set up so loose that it goes up and down huge amounts if you just touch it. God knows how he plays it but he plays the shit out of it.
Their gig at Supernormal a few years back as the sun was going down was like seeing the Jimi Hendrix Experience or something.

Thanks for the picture! That's a kooky guitar, but makes total sense why he'd cut the horns like that.

I can't tell from the picture that trem springs are very loose, but I can definitely hear and see it - he gets a lot of action from pressing down on the bridge.

I hope he keeps playing guitar in some context. His playing is truly unique.

Yeah, it really was.

All the members were at Supernormal the next year- Wharves and Shitwife were playing. I tried to get Stef to play an impromptu gig.
