in the wake of Defending the Swede's impassioned writing a page back pumping the Rush I finally checked this band out. "Moving Pictures", the most accessible they say.

I cannot hear anything. It's just tepid rock

ffs

If you fired Rush into the fuckin moon they'd probably still land in the middle of the road.

Not high literature or anything, mostly journal entries and letters. The overall tone of I tried to do everything right, and everything turned out so wrong was certainly a bummer. It's an interesting document of everything blowing up in the face of a perfectionist.

Maybe "perfectionist" isn't a proper description. I get the sense that he's spent the better part of his life uncomfortable in his own skin, and it's something he's always trying to outrun. Maybe his drum style is an attempt to outrun awkwardness, which often ends up sounding awkward. I don't think he's trying to impress anyone but himself, and maybe his bandmates. He seems to find all of the accolades embarrassing. Whether you like his drumming or not, it's unmistakably his own, and between that and his general human decency, I find it hard to dislike what he does or who he is.

Anyway, Rush will never be crap, in my book. Beyond the Lighted Stage is on Netflix right now, and it's worth seeing, whether you like them or not.

I still stand by this. I'm glad he existed. I'll miss him.

Watching the RUSH: Exit-Stage Left dvd while recording an Effigies / Da cd for a friend I'm meeting for lunch tomorrow. It makes sense to me.

I listened to Fly by Night the other day. Anthem I liked from before, but the title track is also great. The acoustic parts I'm not crazy about. Still, it's catchy and upbeat and I like it. Quite surprising to me since I mostly have no time for '70s hard rock.

Considering Neil Peart is such a "drummer's drummer", the drumming is not at all overwrought or ostentatious. He's playing the music rather than the instrument, to use a cliché.

It's also the first album he plays on Give him a decade to get into it.
