I myself am not too sure about this one, and havent listened to them enough. I'm definately willing to trust the board's music taste on this one.

Xiu Xiu

Um, I've only heard a few tracks myself-- off the new album with a naked guy on the cover-- but I feel I can answer not crap without hesitation.

Some of it can definitlely be challenging (even annoying) to listen to, but there's just too much reckless genius at work for it to be crap.

My 2 cents

The creepiness first interested me. I saw them(really just him) live and overwroughtness drowned out the creepy molester vibe. For those who don't have enough drama in their life.:P

Bringing it back to the front!

I just got advance mp3s of their new album and I think that it's really pretty good. I can see why people wouldn't like them. I don't know why I like them too much myself. They're very interesting, though.

I really love this band, and love seeing them in concert (as everytime has been a different line up). Some very good friends of mine absolutely despise this band, and I can understand that. They are not really a band that leaves you on the fence in any sort of way. I can't wait to hear their new record.

NOT CRAP

saw live once... quirky, above-par angsty electro. guy is whiny, which normally i don't like, but he's SOOOOOOO whiny that it becomes strangely humorous in a way that i think has some worth. he started like, sobbing and yipping like a dog and it reached a certain absurdity.

of course, not even close to the magnificient absurdity of seeing PEELANDER Z!

not crap.

Great music. Strange and unique. A bit too much at times, but a bit too much is often better than not enough.

Not crap, no waffle. I do not like all of his material, but it is uncompromising in the way that art should be. To me, that is worthy of respect.

The set at Pitchfork was excellent, and even enjoyable, much to my surprise.

I might be wrong about this band. In interviews, Jamie Stewart comes off as being completely full of shit...but the music he makes is pretty interesting. In a few years, I could see myself hating on Xiu Xiu, but for now I have to say NC.

Waffle (one of many): My friend at U of I (Urbana-Champaign) was drunk and wandering through the student union when he happened to run into Stewart. My friend says, "you're Jamie Stewart!"...they proceed to talk for a little while...and then, with derision, Stewart asks my friend "I'm sorry, is that raspberry vodka on your breath?" (<-hey, the guy was a freshman). My friend says "FUCK YOU!" and sticks his middle finger right in Jamie Stewart's face. He then drunkenly stormed off. Methinks those Olympia/general hipster (<- particularly the "straight edge" hipsters) types could use more confrontations like that (yes, I know he's not from Olympia).

WARNING: completely NON-SEQUITUR from here on out.

Not to condone violence (well, maybe a little) but it reminds me of another story...one time I was at a hipster party where all the kids were listening to the Arcade Fire when my Milwaukee friend got spooked like a dog (or something) by a motion a kid made. The kid pulled back his head like a 1910 style boxer (with no intention of fighting...a total coincidence of a motion) and my drunk friend jacked this hipster kid in the face with a quick three punch combination (he got into a lot of fights growing up in Milwaukee). The hipsters promptly attacked him and kicked the shit out of him. I never told the hipsters that it was my friend who had flipped out on that kid and I could only laugh under my breath when I heard the victim described as being "nicer than Jesus."

The moral of the story is that I was glad to see that kids who really like the Arcade Fire and grow stupid mustaches/wear white belts/get similar piercings depending on what's popular...can still be full of piss and vinegar. They kicked my friend real good.

I saw that set. Probably the only good festival they'll ever put on. It was really good...liked him better live.

He's playing at Bottom Lounge soonish. It's on a Tuesday, so I'm thinking it'll be pretty empty. Anyone interested in going?
