I haven't heard much of Xiu Xiu. I know Parenthetical Girls were heavily influenced by them and Xiu Xiu have remixed some of their tracks.
I love Parenthetical Girls. Their new album wasn't as good as their last though.

Foresight, salut! I hate this band.

Still, that set I saw Xiu Xiu play in 2007 was enjoyable. It was way prettier than any of their records.

Caralee McElroy was in the band for The Air Force. That record sucks the dick outside of two songs. I fail to see your point.

Could be, though it's actually kind of funny in comparison to all the godawful jokes I've made around here...

As for what, indeed, is the best Xiu Xiu album... who knows, they all kind of blow it in one way or another. I do quite like the more acoustic moments of A Promise, however.

NOT CRAP

Well, this finds us about 5 years later. The quality of this bands recorded output has, in my opinion, sharply declined. I still stand by everything from Knife Play up to and including Fabulous Muscles. That being said, both Jamie and Carrie are wonderful human beings whom have been awesome the few times I have had the pleasure of dealing with them. I have also heard stories regarding Jamie and his righteousness and have nothing to add to them because they weren't told to me by the people involved.

Live they are incredible.

NOT CRAP.

Yes.

seen them three times, and every time they seem to rip their material apart and create an entirely new composition. it's not always successful, but I do enjoy their willingness to change it up.

Jamie/Caralee/Devin/Ches was my fave line-up.

Crap, but with some waffles. Some of their songs are something I'd love to get behind if it wasn't for the fact that it was Jamie Stewart being Jamie Stewart. There's also the fact that some of the songs...well, they're just not really songs? And I have an incredibly liberal definition of what a song can be (especially considering what I listen to on a daily basis). I've tried to get into them because I have friends who like these guys - but I just can't for the reasons I've stated. Their albums, they're all "listen to once and then never ever again" to me.

I was tapped to review Dear God I Hate Myself for this one site I occasionally write for. I'll post it here if anyone wants to read it.

Went on a big kick around 2003/4. Haven't really gone back and listened to those records since then, but I did really like the first two records around that time.

Jamie played solo at my house around that time and was great, and incredibly nice. Quickest I've ever seen someone change a guitar string in the middle of a set, so props for that.

I'm always surprised at Xiu Xiu's popularity with the Pitchfork crowd. For the most part the band aims to be entirely inaccessible - murmuring vocals, blaring synths, drama to the point of tinnitus - but yet they have a pretty large following.

Anyways, I like their first few, loved Fabulous Muscles and La Foret, thought they lost the plot for the next two, but then Dear God I Hate Myself and now Always are fantastic.

I already have tickets for them next week in Chicago. I've heard they're blisteringly abrasive live, and I hope that's true.

i haven't really heard enough to get behind them as a band, but not crap based on what i've heard. i like how creative the arrangements and sounds often are, but sometimes it comes off to me as kinda random and overly dramatic in a forced way. my impression is that "knife play" is their best, so i'll check that one out. my friend Daphny is also good friends with Jamie Stewart (she has a song about her) which i thought was really cool (though i don't really like the song).

I saw these guys play some ten years ago and they put on a really good show. I bought a cd from them at the show, but it wasn't that good. Not horrible, just forgettable. I'll give them a waffley not crap.

Saw this band about ten years ago. The guy sang in helpless crybaby tones. Total Eeyore music. The highlight of the show was when he used a vibrator in a jar as a percussion instrument, I guess.

Based on that one show, crap.

The recent one, "Always," is pretty good. Better than what I was expecting, anyway. Still, I think they peaked with "Fabulous Muscles."
