"Hipster Metal"

Jesu was great for 3 releases. Pelican intrigued me on the first release. Neurosis is it's own beast, one I have lost all interest in, but respect.

Prefer the entire Nippon noise/prog scene that a lot of these bands are loosely associated with. (I.e. Zeni Geva, YBO2, RUINSOMOIDE HATOBA).

Not Metal. Heavy music, sure, but, not Metal.

Baroness

Just listened to this band. Urgh. Post-It® Metal?

..."Girlfriend Metal" and the whole "only men like the real stuff"-attitude can go die in a fire, as far as I'm concerned.

For the record I do not endorse such terms, just pointing out a band that gets called that

IMO "Boutique pedal metal" is more accurate
(relies a lot on the sound itself and there is a lot of gear snobbery in the genre IMO)

154 wrote: I like most of those bands' first albums/demos but this 'genre' turned to CRAP real fast.

yeah I agree but it's true for almost any genre I fear, The bigger the following, the faster the worthless bands invasion will happen.

anyways "Graphic Designer Metal" made me have a good laugh :smt005

What was that Mighty Boosh line? Putting two cool things together to make something not quite as cool as either.

Pelican and Isis were tremendously boring live and the records I heard were much of the same. Russian Circles sounded a touch more exciting but I've only heard them briefly.

Isis' earlier stuff is very good IMO (first EPs, Celestial...), they became boring later.

Which choice is "crap"?

I'm extremely bored by this genre and all of those bands listed. Which is weird, because I like Mogwai/GY!BE and Sabbath. Is there a word for the sum is lesser than the parts?

Where does this intersect with "Crossfit Metal"?

The (fantastic) term "crossfit metal" makes me think of testorone-driven, angry growlingish vocals over downtudned chugga-chugga guitars, something guys at the gym can lift weights to. so I don't see much similarities to "post-metal".

edit: pretty much this:

BTW, Is Russian Circles graphic designer metal? They're not crap.

Definite overlap between beard balm and crossfit metal. Microbrew metal?

Microbrew metal IMO is more an ovetlap with Boutique Pedals Metal or Graphic Designer Metal than with Crossfit Metal
