I just don't know that i need to know the deep, dark, tragic origin of a character that is at his best when he's a chaos-wreaking force of nature. I'm sure Mr. Phoenix will kill it, though.

That's going to be a tough one.

While I don't entirely disagree, Phillips seems to be framing it as a character study revolving around a descent/downhill slide as opposed to the "Classic Coke" Joker.

Kind of an interesting proposition.

It looks underwhelming. The only way I see it being any good is if it's really weird, weirder than anything DC has put out, but the trailer makes it look bland and uninspired. Takes a few too many notes from stuff like Taxi Driver and its color palette is terrible. I'll be surprised if it's any good.

After seeing the trailer I was looking into whether Joker has an "official" origin and found this on Wikipedia.

In the 1988 story "A Death in the Family", the Joker beats Jason Todd with a crowbar and leaves him to die in an explosion. Todd's death haunts Batman, and for the first time he considers killing the Joker.[49] The Joker temporarily escapes justice when Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini appoints him the Iranian ambassador to the United Nations, giving him diplomatic immunity. However, when he tries to poison the UN membership, he is defeated by Batman and Superman.

They made the wrong movie. Could have crossed over to make Lethal Weapon 6.

So, I watched the trailer and I was like "wow, this might be great..."

But then I realized I was thinking this was a Todd Haynes movie.

Once I realized it was not Todd Haynes and instead Todd PHILLIPS (the guy that made The Hangover movies) my excitement subsided considerably. Still...Joaquin makes it look like it could be worth seeing. Apparently there is a strong and deliberate connection to The King Of Comedy, which is also kind of interesting.

Ultimately, though, I wish Todd Haynes made it and not the guy who made Old School and the Starsky & Hutch reboot. His resume doesn't lend much gravity (or hope).

I think the trailer looks awesome. Didn't enjoy the Hangovers at all, but this looks very interesting, and as already mentioned by others, Phoenix is capable of great things.

I love the part where he's like "Somebody stop me!"

I appreciate that bro is trying to connect this movie to The King of Comedy, which is one of my all-time favorites, but it's still about The Jokester so it looks inherently silly.

Todd Phillips made the GG Allin doc, which is worth noting. He's done a bunch of absolute garbage (and GG Allin SUCKS SHIT as a human), but that doc. is bonks and heavy duty at times.

But yeah, Todd Haynes. That would have been wonderful, too!

Or Todd Solondz! That would be even better, actually. A 'Welcome To The Dollhouse'/'Happiness' vibe would be perfect for this Joker movie.

I guess I had an amalgam of the Haynes/Solandz thing in my head when I first saw the trailer.

IMO the definitive Joker origin story is the one from The Killing Joke (If we really need one, The Dark Knight seemed all the better for not having one). They seem to be hinting at doing something similar to the Killing Joke origin here. I'll give it a watch, but lately DC comics movies just send me to sleep, so my expectations are low.

Yep. Feels a lot like The Killing Joke with the "Batman" component(Batman/Gordon/Barbara) thrown overboard.

Pause the trailer at 1:03, and take a look at the actual name of the comedy club behind the guy that's performing.

So, yeah...

I'm essentially on the same page as Ike. That the director is the guy that was behind Hated: GG Allin And The Murder Junkies putting a version of The Killing Joke on film is what is going to get me in the seat.

Never mind that Brian Tyree Henry turned up in the trailer. I'd probably show up just for that.

This guy has made documentaries about both GG Allin and Phish.

Which is worth noting.
