Graphic Novel Adaptation: The Boys

New series on Amazon Prime: The Boys

Pretty entertaining so far. Haven't read the graphic novels.

Might be for the best.

It's pretty inside baseball.

Inside baseball with a heaping side order of really, really hating superhero comics. I'm okay with that part, but Garth Ennis really should have stopped with The Pro and moved on from there.

One guy's take...

Once DC Comics sent them packing, I was fine with the creative team going on ahead and doing what they had intended.

Just made sense in the "Meta" context. That said, I see what you are saying.

So is the consensus here that the show is good, and the comics are best avoided? I'm having a tough time reading the subtext.

Had me hooked.

Bit surprised Homelander and the main bearded goodie are both New Zealanders. Explains Homelanders snarky "nice accent" aside at one stage cos beardo's accent was all over the shop. He'd start out a sentence all cockney-like, veer into Straya, then give up and wind it up in the flettened vowels of Aotearoa. His dialogue was fun though.

Also, I had a mega-crush on the evil milf matron.

Best part was that as superheroes I just realised that none of them did any actual superhero saving people shit in the whole series. All PR.

I really didn't care for the comics. I appreciate and agree with the "abuse of power comes as no surprise" point Garth Ennis was going for, but I didn't really find the characters engaging. The strain of homophobia underlying some of the pejorative language just seemed tired, too. I think I made it to the 3rd book before saying fuckit. All of which is not really making me want to watch the series.

One guy's take on the comics...

If you think back to Preacher, Jesse and Cassidy are each men who wind up a ways over the line during the series. That said, it never really feels like they are beyond being redeemable.

The Boys winds up being a whole lot more grey than that. It is largely a comic that feels like it's characters are probably past ever being redeemed. The show is downright "Cuddly..." compared to the comic.

Personally, I wouldn't really tell anyone they should read it.

Preview of Aya Cash playing Stormfront in the second season...

First Look at “The Boys” Star Aya Cash as Stormfront, Who Will Destroy The Seven from Within

On the one had, Aya Cash is an operator. On the other hand, that article feels like they will be largely abandoning the comic series.

Honestly, I feel like there's just that one big moment near the end that I'd like them to keep, but they seem to have ignored the setup that makes it necessary, so who knows. Going back to some of the comic, I def didn't have much patience for it, so I think it's probably smart to go in another direction.
