Ad Astra

Postby the finger genius on Sat Sep 21, 2019 7:51 pm

I had been looking forward to this, and had a few hours to see it this afternoon. The pacing was rough, and overall I don't think it made me feel the way it wanted to (unless the goal was some combination of bored and depressed.)

Lots of great visuals, which were awesome, but this could have been so much more than just space porn.

Bah, I was hoping we might get a decent space movie after Gravity and Interstellar both turned out to be a sack of turds. Well, I guess The Martian was all right.

The only sci-fi I've seen in the last five years that hit the mark was His Master's Voice.

You should see First Man, if you haven't. It captures the terror and claustrophobia of space travel (at that period in time) pretty well.

Not really a "space movie," but I agree that First Man was quite good.

I'd like to recommend "Moon", a wonderful little sci-film with a "proper" sci-fi feel. It is also PRF approved

Oh yes, Moon is most excellent and gets the big tick from me as well, although it's been a decade since that one came out and by all accounts Zowie Bowie seems to be making dreadful movies now.

Oh! You pretty terrible things.

I generally love slow-moving space movies, so I was sure I'd be into this movie. I was not. The performances were great and I loved the production design, but the story was just a whole lot of nothing.

CRAP.

Yeah, this is right. I saw it a few days ago and it's grown on me as I've thought about it but mostly it makes me think about how much better High Life was.

I wish Brad Pitt's character's name was Edward so he could have been Ed Astra. Really, though, I really want to watch High Life again.

Didn't care for it. The set pieces, while cool, were really not organic to the story. Pirates on the moon?

And Jesus Christ, not telling space command about a pilot who flat up froze at the controls?

And what if space turns out to be mostly bullshit?

The film’s chief virtue is that it’s impressive, which is, unfortunately, not the same as good.
