Band: Hey Colossus

Postby Sprague Dawley on Tue Oct 08, 2019 1:55 am

oh man how could this one not have been done. I am fascinated by this English band. they've made about 10 albums, i've got about 4 but from what I can make out they've had 3 distinct phases:

2004-2008: doom sludge, goddamn awesome
2009, 2010: "experimental noise
2010~oh dear. reemerged as indie rock?

2004: Hey Colossus Hates You. damnit I want this. in my tiny mind i now think of this as a doom sludge holy grail. lp goes for big bucks online

2005: Hey Colossus II 10/10. the planets aligned here

2006: Hey Colossus / Dot (.) damnit I want to hear this

2007: Project: Death: 8/10 the only cd I've ever bought that sounds like a cassette tape. so good. sludge roar.

2008: Happy Birthday. 5/10 i dont understand what happened with this one. its just an inaccessible squall

i want in-depth takes from YOU on all albums from 2010 to now.

Good Sir! Put the Charlie Sheen Drugs away for a moment and catch up with what you've been missing. They are - of course - one of the UK's greatest live bands and their evolution and integrity remains a small miracle. As a fan (and indeed anyone who's curious about an unsparing account of what it's truly like to be in a band in our common era) you should pick up Joe Thompson's Sleevenotes.

Here's a few selected highlights from the last few albums. I have an illimitable fondness for the murk and sizzle of In Black And Gold, I really love the sound of this album (full disclosure: I overlooked the following Radio Static High a little bit as I'd not finished absorbing IBAG, who releases two outstanding albums in the same year?).

Back in the Room: A cleaner and more focussed sound, sure but still feels like being bludgeoned and run over by heavy plant machinery.

Calenture Boy: I enjoyed FM NewDarkAge's take on this which was something like "this is what Radiohead must sound like to people who like them."

The latest album is fantastic and endlessly diverse I could have picked any track.

All of this sounds astonishing live. Reacquaint yourself at first opportunity. Peerlessly great band, NC.
