Worst Mastered/Mixed/Produced Album

Postby Tommy on Wed Oct 16, 2019 11:09 am

I tried to include all of the ones I could think of that have been debated. I still don't think Steady Diet belongs on this list, but I know a lot of you hate the production.

I'm going with Warehouse. All of Husker Du's records could use some help, but this one is the worst offender to me. Zero low end. High end that is extremely smeary white noise with sibilance issues.

It’s not on the list, but the first two Ozzy records sound just awful. That’s what happens when you snort your engineering budget, I guess. I might hate the sound of those records more than any other.

What's your opinion of the 2002 re-recording of the bass/drums?

Voted St. Anger because of the budget involved. Some of these others can be forgiven a bit considering what they had to work with.

St. Anger, easy.

Raw Power, in general, and Steady Diet hurt more because the material is so good. Justice, same but not as big a deal; the basslessness doesn't keep me from enjoying it.

The ZZ Top remixes are probably the worst of that lot since they took GREAT sounding records and made Eliminator-ized them into bullshit. The other records at least don't have an amazing sounding version for comparison!

I’ve never heard the Ozzy remasters. When we were kids, though, my brother and I usually listened to the Tribute live record, because it sounded way better.

Of those listed I go St. Anger.

Would have included Orgasmatron.

Always wished that Husker Du albums sounded better. Warehouse is especially disappointing. Lots of great songs on that album but the bass is non-existent. Drums sound like keyboard drums.

Absolutely. When I first heard the originals I was dumbfounded. Some of the best sounding records ever made and they did THAT to them. Boggles the mind.

St Anger still sounds worse though.

Also, I feel like Steady Diet is just sort of a boring sounding/performed record. If that was the only Fugazi record, I'm sure it wouldn't be thought of as "worst mastered/mixed/produced". Definitely doesn't sound as bad/unnatural as Warehouse (which I still love despite the recording) or AJFA or an abject failure like SKOM.

This is a really, really GREAT album, so doesn't fit the bill here at all, but the last Pile album sounds super weird to me. All recorded, mixed, and mastered by the same person I see.

I don't have it on vinyl, so maybe that's a better cut?

The digital version is quiet and a little muddy at times. I love the album, though.

Fair.

I still think it is one of the better-sounding Fugazi records amidst a bunch of great sounding records. I don't get what everyone hates. Is it that everything is clearer sounding and it has a greater separation of instruments? Everyone loves Kill Taker but everything about that record is less interesting to me. It definitely has more attitude, but I just don't prefer the way it's recorded. The high end is all crunchy on it. The kick on Public Witness Program sounds like ass.

If St. Anger weren't such a pile of shit (hard to imagine, I know) I don't think the production would be as loathed. Ok the snare will always be baffling but otherwise the production isn't far off from Meshuggah or something.

The ZZ Top remix thing is unforgivable and worse, they never undid those versions. I'm sure you could go buy one of those CDs at WalMart right now..

One awfully mixed record: the Zwan album is so fucking brickwalled that it's literally painful to listen to for more than a few minutes at a time.

I got way bummed just trying to internalize that someone actually feels this way.

I could probably put a long, long list of these.

That's not even counting records that I feel like were just ahead of recording technology at the time they were made.
