Movie: Knives Out

Postby night_tools on Sat Nov 30, 2019 6:11 pm

The new Rian Johnson film.
Saw it tonight. Great cast, sags a bit in the middle but ties it all together very nicely in the end.

Reminded me a lot of the Gregory McDonald books. Fletch or Flynn could easily have taken up the detective role of Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc.
Was there talk at one point of Rian Johnson doing a Fletch movie or did I invent that? The protagonist of Brick certainly put me in mind of a young Irwin Maurice Fletcher.
Even the font is similar...

Pretty good overall. The first 15-20 minutes of the interrogation/introduction of the family led me to believe that it was going to be disappointing, but when it gets to the scene of Harlan and Marta in the study, that's when it got good.

Daniel Craig's southern accent kind of got on my nerves at times.

Loved it.

Craig's accent was preposterous but had an internal logic. After about 15min I came to enjoy it.

I agree it seemed a little long in the middle, but by the time it wrapped up, I can't say exactly what you'd wanna cut.

Good flick. Well-shot and edited. I like how haggard the whole family was, compared to the luminous nurse.

It's the 2nd movie I've seen lately where specific people looked all haggard--Once Upon a Time in America, Brad Pitt and Leo Dicaprio look super hagged out. It's the New Thing. Just in time!

Man, if any of the alt-right scummy Star Wars fans that shit on Riann Johnson for filling The Last Jedi with actors of color happen to walk into this, they're gonna be SO MAD.

Absolutely loved it. Great use of the whodoneit formula and the politics are heavy handed to you and I but probably not to a mainstream audience just expecting a routine murder mystery.

Felt quite faithful to the sort of social commentary you get in Agatha Christie (much of which is opaque to modern readers). The alt-right kid is pure trolling, of course (especially the description of his toilet activities).

The first bit was easy to guess, which worried me. But then it was just great fun, family friendly, and the right ending. High marks, cinema audience left very happy. And Chris Evans seemed to be having the time of his life (and still sported the Captain America huge biceps).

PLDMS,
Would a 6-almost-7-year-old be okay you think?

I know my teenager would be fine--she's into way creepy shit.

After talking with Tallchris and Jordana I really want to see this film.

By 'family friendly' I meant you could take older relatives over the holiday period and you'll all have a good time. (Unlike the occasion when we traumatised my partner's parents seeing 'Shallow Grave' years ago...)

I've suggested films for kids in the past, and have forgotten they contain clearly inappropriate sections, so don't trust me. The BBFC (which gives it a 12A) says:
BBFC wrote:brief bloody images, moderate sex and suicide references, strong language

The suicide is briefly shown, and a bit nasty (but that's mostly implied). Sex references (iirc) is a reference the colourful onanistic practices of the alt-right kid. I guess there must be a 'fuck' or two in there?

It's not a nasty film, there are no scares, and there's no threat really. I'd be more worried about them being bored: it's over 2 hours, with a moderately complicated narrative.

Yeah, I think it might be a smidge too much for a kid your youngest's age. I'm not worried as much about the language (shits and 1 or 2 fucks) as I am some of the very slight gore/violence.

I wouldn't hesitate to take a 10-12 year old though, especially if they're already inquisitive about movies, etc.

NOT CRAP.

I loved it. It might be my favorite movie of the year, but I'm predisposed to like murder-mysteries and Rian Johnson's movies.

Fantastic film. One of my favorites in the past 5 years. Perfectly executed.
Keeps you guessing right until the end.
Also lots of Ana D. Armos screentime is great by me. Talented actress and otherworldly stunning.

I was surprised (surprised?) to learn after seeing it that it was rated PG-13.

Would totally take MC to see it if she wanted.

I think the pacing of the first 15 minutes is a little off. You get rattled through the interviews with the family and you receive a lot of info about them verbally without having the chance to just observe them. My other quibble would be that Lakeith Stanfield is a bit underused.

But those are quibbles, it's an enjoyable film. It never takes itself too seriously. The bits in cars are great.

Lighthearted, enjoyable movie and something I could take my elderly parents to.

Caveats: Craig's accent was dumb and distracting. Was expecting a bigger/better twist. Most of the ensemble cast members were underused. Given the political/racial thread re: immigrant domestic labor, my girlfriend was annoyed they cast someone white-passing as the immigrant nurse, which is true.

Saw it tonight and completely enjoyed it.

I love how the movie both included immigration as a subject and enacted the immigration issue in its structure—namely, the way in which the family believes their owed something simply because of birthright.

The offhand delivery of the funny bits had me snorting-giggling.

Highly enjoyable, though the "foghorn leghorn" accent did annoy and distract a bit.
