This guy is a total goof. His vocals blow and he has a knack for getting good musicians together only to shit all over their songs with his ridiculously annoying singing style: "booooooo!!!! ehahblahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! eeeeeeeeeeyyyyyy! corplipllllllappppppppp do do do do do do zzzzzzzzzzzzz!" Give it a fucking rest.

Mike Patton....you don't sound scary, you sag your pants, you're not "weird" or "crazy", the only avid followers of yours I've met have been addicted to Meth at least once in their lives, and Mr. Bungle doesn't "trip me out". Shit's just annoying.

CRAP.

I've already voted CRAP, but this guy is really one of the worst. Like a slightly less irritating Frank Zappa jumping around in shorts, boxing gloves, and a mullet/shaved-on-the-sides hairdo.

He makes boring, fussy music that screams "Look how WEIRD I am!" and "Look at all the crazy, disparate genres I can throw into one song!" and "I made an album comprised entirely of stupid noises I made with my mouth!"

He is like They Might Be Giants/Bobby McFerrin for metal dudes, depending on which of his tedious projects we're talking about.

aw man.. i actually hashed this one out before in another far off locale.. but my take is NOT CRAP for his clear dedication, ipecac, and the seemingly endless dedication that he has to keep cool music going.

but i can not even pretend to like anything he's ever done.

that said.. i can't pan the guy 'cause he's TOTALLY lazarus.

This is a great video.

First of all, it's funny. If you get through the whole thing without laughing, then I bet you are letting your prejudices get in your way.

I like that dude knew he was going to be on stage alone, reading sheet music off a stand, but instead of dressing in an analogous, serious manner, just stuck to the slicked back hair / baggy pants / no shirt thing he's been doing for the past twenty years.

Good mic technique, too. And he sets a good example for aspiring musicians by bowing, neatly folding his music, and taking it with him as he leaves the stage.

Puke-inducing, ultraprolific Zappa/Zorn-damaged vocal blabber for "extreme" music fans who lack attention spans and/or taste.

Plus a side order of "eclectic" funkmetal.

Wacky.

And crappy.

Ah, I wouldn't say he's total crap.

Ipecac? That label has put out some great music from artists that would otherwise be completely ignored.

Faith No More? Yeah, in retrospect they sucked.

Mr. Bungle? I still like 'em. Of course the genius in/of that band was Trey Sprunance.

Fantomas? The first record was fantastic...

Everything else he's done? Absolute shit.

As a vocalist, strictly regarding his capabilities, a HUGE Not Crap is in order. Dude's talented whether you like him or not. His ideas may not be the most original in the world, but he's got a serious set of pipes.

As a vocalist, I think Mike Patton is unparalleled. That being said, I'm not an apologist, nor a fan of every thing that he has done.

But, I am also not a staunch fan of opera. I enjoy certain operas, but as a whole I don't seek them out. That doesn't mean that I don't fully appreciate and respect the discipline and talent it takes to perform in one.

I think with Patton, if one dismisses him as "total crap" or absolute crap", that is way too easy.

The previously posted clip of the 7 minute solo vocal performance is technically incredible. I can't think of another vocalist off of the top of my head who could pull off that meticulous arrangement with such precision, dexterity, pitch and control.

Really, I think that 50 years ago we would have been hearing him in Warner Brothers cartoons or as vocalist with Raymond Scott or something of that ilk.

I personally dislike Faith No More (excluding "Easy"), like & saw Mr. Bungle a bunch, wanted to like Tomahawk but eventually didn't, was blown away by live Fantomas even though the records are not particularly engaging, and haven't heard much else excepting some John Zorn-related stuff (which isn't particularly in my wheelhouse).

Anyway not crap with several orders of waffles, but more about my enjoyment of the music than his performing.
It's like you put everything into a bottle inside itself.

I like me some Faith No More. I like Tomahawk alright. Ipecac has put out some great releases. Any interviews I've seen or read with him have lead me to believe that he's an intelligent and hard working guy that follows though with doing exactly what he wants to do at that point in time.

So, not crap. Though I'm certain a considerable amount of his output is nothing too amazing.
