Patton may be an acquired taste, but def not crap. For him to get such a strong reaction one way or the other shows he's doing everything right. The man is himself, and I think he's a fucking genius.

'RV' is surely the best thing he has ever used his voice to deliver.

I like a few Tomahawk songs, but that can't really save him from earning my crap vote; I don't mind that other people think he's amazing or a genius, they're not nearly as bad as Lost fans. ;)

Tomahawk could've been a really good band had they chose someone else to sing for them.

Edit: sometimes tabbed browsing produces unwanted results.

(You might've been confused as to which two hullahooping Tomahawk members I would have sex with.)

This majority-crap vote, she is heartening.

So many- so fucking many-- of my friends think this guy is such a genius that I wonder what I'm missing.

I just read him as an ADHD-riddled cunt who's wacky for wackiness' sake. If wackiness is a release for most people, fine. cool. If that means that I'm the weirdo for finding that wacky shit annoying instead of amusing, then what the fuck ever.

It's not even that wackiness itself is bad-- I love Zappa, and that shit's wacky. But it's also witty.

Take a listen to 200 Motels and then get back to me on that one.

Both of you are way ahead of me on that one...can't stand that album.

Weasels Ripped My Flesh, though, that one's a killer. Last great album he did.

Have you heard the Fantomas/Melvins Big Band? They released a CD that was alright, but the DVD is pretty cool, w/ better sound quality, I think. The Melvins songs they do are awesome. "Night Goat" and the Flipper cover "Sacrifice" (warning: Patton whistles on this, but to good effect, in my opinion) both stand out, but pretty much every Melvins song on there is the shit. His voice goes really well w/ Buzz's (they both sing on Melvins songs). Also, the songs they do from The Director's Cut album, where Patton actually has lyrics for the most part, are also pretty good.
Lombardo & Crover both on drums*, Trevor Dunn, Buzz, Patton, and David Scott Stone on guitar, bass, and his Electric Long Thin Wire invention noise thingy. On the CD, I'm pretty sure Kevin Rutmanis plays bass as well.

*Side-note on this: I think Dale pulls off the 2-drummer thing w/ Dave L. way better than the current incarnation of Melvins does.

This is over a year old, but I recently found out about this Mike Patton/Secret Chiefs 3 cover of the Jacques Brel/Scott Walker song "Jacky":

I like Brel and Walker, and I think Mike Patton does a perfectly good job here. The music is spot-on.

If you're not going to sing it like you mean it, it still has to mean something. I'm not voting crap, but I never really feel like checking out any of his post-late 90s music.

I also am a Brel and Walker fan, and it might seem that I'm looking for things to complain about, but:

I'm completely lost as to what the point is of making a basically identical clone to Walker's (well, Angela Morely's) arrangement and instrumentation.

It's also not in keeping with Patton's...eclecticism to use Walker's as a model when Brel's versions are so much more idiosyncratic and bombastic.

Weird reversal of expectations here.
